Trailer Season 2 of "The Morning Show" (Apple TV Plus)

1923. This is the number of original series aired this year in the United States.

Dramas, comedies and reality shows from all over the world that were available on a variety of American channels and streaming services - according to a Variety analysis.

This is a new record that continues the over-the-top TV trend of the last 20 years - from 127 series in 2002 to more than ten times in 2021.

The amazing thing is that this time it is happening even though the constraints of the plague have delayed quite a few productions.

In 2020, for the first time in 12 years (even then there was forced braking in Hollywood, in that case due to the screenwriters' strike), there was a decrease in the number of series produced.

But as expected, it was just a slight blow to the wing and the ascent continues.

Next year, most likely, we will cross the 2,000 line for the first time ever.

These are crazy numbers that on the one hand open up an unprecedented abundance to TV viewers, and on the other hand often make it difficult for them to find their hands and feet and deepen their inability to take control of everything.

And as every year in our opening words in the series summary parades, we make a proper revelation about the inability to really watch all the content, and accordingly there may be shortcomings that such and other surfers will find scandalous.

Back in time: The 10 best Israeli series of the year 5771

Either way, the consensus among the three ranks of this parade is that the insane amount was inconsistent with the dubious quality. Too many series in which we hung hopes have failed - new seasons of series that we really liked before but collapsed this time, or alternatively creators who excited us in the past but did not really manage to sweep us this time (more on that in the review of this year's soul bins this coming Friday).

And aside from the disappointments, the bulk of the TV was made up of series that are just fine. reasonability. Do not renew anything but pass the time without too much suffering. But in an age with so much television, isn't watching mediocre series a waste of time? Not that one has to watch challenging prestige series like "The White Lotus" or "The Railroad Underground," but there are also a lot of cute things that are very, very good. We hope to represent the selection of these in the parade in front of you.

As every year, we put it together based on the objective quality, the importance of each series in the cultural fabric and discourse, and above all - personal taste.

More than ever it is clear that personal love has more and more weight, because it is the one that connects us to things.

And after all that is taken into account, throughout the week we will list the 50 series we liked the most in 2021.

Start with places 50-41.

Some of the basic benefits remain.

"Morning Show" (Photo: Apple TV Plus)

50. The morning program

in the 2019 parade:

40th place

There is no elegant way to say it: The second season of "Morning Show" was a whimsical nonsense that Haifa shouted about the lack of dramatic volume, of course the lack of delicacy and nuance. In other words, the series has completely - and certainly not intentionally - devoted itself to its branding as a luxury soap opera. The point is that it turns out that even so it is quite a bit, which indicates the effective formula of the series. Despite the superficiality, haste, awkward scenes, faint plot lines and Jennifer Aniston's poor acting - most of the time we just did not want the episodes to end.

Some of the basic benefits of the series remain: Abundance is seen in almost every frame.

It is still the series in which New York looks the most beautiful on television, and this time it was also amazing to present the amazing landscapes of Como in Italy.

Throughout the season there have been touching moments and scenes that still leave a mark.

At the most technical levels, it's interesting to see how the Corona has influenced the behind the scenes of a studio show of the kind at the center of the plot.

The already impressive cast was joined this time by Juliana Margolis ("The Good Wife," "ER") in a significant supporting role, and in smaller roles Will Arnett, Kathy Najimi, Hassan Minaj and Holland Taylor.

And perhaps most importantly: Reese Witherspoon passed away from the terrible wig of the first season, thank God.

An essential human connection.

"Shadow and Bone" (Photo: Netflix / David Appleby)

49. Shadow and bone

Original Name:

Shadow and Bone

Broadcast:

Netflix

The television adaptation of "Shadow and Bone" owes, of course, a large debt to "Game of Thrones." There are many parallel lines between the two series, but what prevents "Shadow and Bone" from being a soulless duplication is its protagonists. While their adventures are not original and they themselves are not particularly deep, they are simply endearing - not least thanks to the casting. The chemistry between them is captivating and adds a lot of power to the story of two friends / lovers / family members who are separated by powerful factors.

One of the smartest moves of the television adaptation is not to settle for the book after which it is named but to weave in it also "Six Crows", another novel by the epic creator, Lee Bardugo, in the same world, which injects fun and action from robbery films into classic mythology on light And darkness.

Beyond that, the presence of the three characters that make up the team - serious-minded leader Kaz (Freddie Carter), athletic assassin Inge (Amita Marken) and fun-loving gunman and burglar Jasper (Kit Young) - sharpens the central idea of "Shadow and Bone".

It is an idea that helps her overcome what is less impressive in her: the deeper she gets to know them, the more it is clear that the three thieves are not just temporary colleagues in the profession, but ones who have found a vital and close human connection with each other.

Despite the journeys and transformations of the protagonists, at its core is a story about a home, no matter where it is, and a search for a family.

"Arcain" (Photo: Netflix)

48. Arcane

Original Name:

Arcane

Broadcast:

Netflix The

phrase "based on a computer game" is enough to make many of us give up watching in advance.

To their credit it should be said that the history of the adaptations completely justifies the choice, with an impressive number of hollow, silly works with an ornate appearance.

You must have guessed that "Arkain" does not meet any of these definitions.

And although technically it is indeed based on one of the most popular games in the world today (League of Legends) it does not require any familiarity with the source material to watch it.

Unlike so many works of this kind, "Arkain" refuses to flatten or flatten the characters and story at its center, and cleverly builds a plot that combines social, economic and technological gaps that dramatically affect the relationship of the two sisters at its center: V and Powder.

But even if the story itself does not drop you from the chair, it is the appearance of "Arkain" that makes it a television event.

The impressive animated work creates a beautiful world full of nuances, and the characters themselves are characterized by minute details, with human expressions to the point where they can convey emotion without speaking.

This investment is also reflected in the satisfying and enjoyable battle scenes along the way, which create a new standard for what can be expected from the creation of animation in general - and animation of computer games in general.

Ji-ion in the middle.

"The Department of English" (Photo: Eliza Morse / Netflix)

47. Department of English

Original Name:

The Chair

Broadcast:

Netflix Netflix

's comedy drama is the first series that David Benioff and Dan Weiss have signed since the Game of Thrones ended in 2019. The names of the series in Belaz do correspond (the current one is named after the head of the English department played by Sandra or, the heroine of the series), but they can not be further apart. The "Department of English" was created and written by Amanda Pitt (Benioff's wife) and Annie Julia Weiman, and it takes place at a fictional university that sees how the tension between the generations - the lecturers and students, the lecturers among themselves - overflows.

On the one hand the series manages to say something about the cancellation culture of the younger generation, which neutralizes the ability to conduct complex discussions, and on the other hand also illustrates how the older generations are petrified of their laws and refuse to move forward with the times.

In the middle of the protagonist, Ji-ion, played by O, a new appointment as head of the department who just wants to promote and update the place, and finds herself trying to put out the fires that are also gripping the fringes of her robe.

If there is one thing that sucks in the "English class", it is that it does not fully develop Ji-ion's attempts to create a more up-to-date and advanced class, especially as someone whose very appointment as an Asian woman is a breakthrough for the place.

Maybe two more episodes on the existing six would have helped her breathe better, but even so she is smart, entertaining and fluent.

Bonus (guest appearance spoiler): David Duchovny is hosted in the role himself and laughs at himself, as he has not done since the days of "Larry Sanders" in the 1990s.

So funny in the role of the outsider.

Alan Todick, "Foreign Resident" (Photo: James Dittinger / SyFy)

46. Foreign resident

Original name:

Resident Alien

Broadcast:

SyFy (in Israel Bite and Hot)

Here we have a series that is a classic tale about a fish out of water, a man who had to take on the role of a doctor in a small, frozen and picturesque town, with a local indigenous woman in the clinic. Soon the conquering communality of the locals melts the heart of the protagonist, until its initial purpose is almost dimmed, and at the end the song "My Town" Iris Diment is played. This description applies not only to "Foreign Resident" but also to one of the most wonderful series in the history of television, "Exposure to the North." The resemblance between the two series, which intensified throughout the first season, is just one of the reasons why "Foreign Resident" has been instilling magic since its inception (although other viewers report that it took them several episodes to connect).

In this case the plot story is far more extreme: the protagonist, played by the mighty Alan Toddick ("Fairplay"), is an alien who came to destroy humanity.

His spaceship crashed near a frozen North American town, so he kills the local doctor and takes his skin and identity.

But extreme as it may be, there is a sweet and enlightening humanity in "Foreigner" that drowns out the gloom, and on the other hand that darkness gives the series the sting that prevents it from becoming saccharine.

Perfect balance.

Above all, Toddik is so funny in the role of the outsider that he completely does not understand the human race he has to consume.

While the result is still not really as wonderful as "Exposure to the North," but "Foreign Resident" is very cute and gets better as it progresses - even similar to the classic series - and can certainly turn into something bigger than that.

Glad the second season is just around the corner.

Christine Millioti, "A Chip of Love" (Photo: John P. Johnson / HBO Max)

45. A chip of love

Original Name:

Made for Love

Broadcast:

HBO Max (Israel Bite)

Kristin Milliotti ("How I Met Your Mother", "Fargo 2") and Billy Magnus ("Crazy", "Kimi Schmidt") starred together about three years ago in the great episode " USS Calister "of" Black Mirror ".

Which is funny, because their new comedy on HBO Max sounds like an acceptable and realistic idea for a typical episode of "Mirror" - a woman is horrified to find that her husband has inserted a chip in her head that allows him access to her brain.

But while "Black Mirror" would probably take this matter in the direction of awe-inspiring technological critique, "Made for Love" is actually more interested in talking about other topics, and rightly so.

The series concentrates less on its fictional element, and tries to channel it into a discussion of the hot potato of recent times - privacy and intrusion into it.

The protagonist's true nightmare largely resonates with the sentiments and fears that all of humanity is able to identify with, and even when the series takes comic or angular twists too, it's definitely the general direction and is more interesting and worthy.

In doing so she joins other supernatural comedies from recent years that use their fantastic concept as a springboard to other earthly heights.

And even though the result is nothing short of endearing, the beloved Milliotti is a radiant sun that illuminates everything around her, and her and Magnus's connection produces enough fun moments that completely justify eight half-hour episodes.

Characters that are easy to fall in love with.

"Ginny and Georgia" (Photo: Sophie Giraud, Netflix)

44. Ginny and Georgia

Original Name:

Ginny & Georgia

Broadcast:

Netflix

Despite squeaks, most of

Ginny & Georgia's

gears spin well together, creating a ticking system with a fun story, successful humor and characters that are mostly captivating and touching. Sarah Weisglass as Maxine regularly overshadows one of those whose name appears in the series' name, Ginny, played by Antonia Getteri's anemic. Maxine's love searches are incredibly sweet, she's a great comedian, and generally looks like a star in the making. Jennifer Roverstone (Jocelyn from "Sheets Creek") is a great role as Allen, the mother of Maxine and Marcus, who connects with Georgia as soon as she arrives in town. Even with not much screen time it is always funny and evocative. Raymond Ablack ("Orphan Black"), who plays restaurant owner Joe, is graceful and amusing in a way he never manages to resist the press called Georgia.Throughout the season it is hard not to hope that something will happen between them.

And of course, there is Georgia itself.

Like her daughter she is also written with slight clichés, but from the outset is portrayed as a more fun and funny character, so it is easy to dance on them.

Above all, Brian Howie exudes in Georgia a flurry of charm and southern charm, often making it clear how she captures attention as she enters a room, each room.

Howie excels in her comical and relaxed moments, but also touches easily as soon as she shows vulnerability.

The great mass of characters that are easy to fall in love with is the strongest card of "Ginny and Georgia", which testifies to its overall charm.

Whether or not "Gilmore Girls" fans will find their idol in it, and even if it does not become a classic like it, the new series easily positions itself as a pleasurable viewing option in itself.

The small details make the difference.

"His Honor" (Photo: Skip Bollen / Showtime)

43. His Honor

Original name:

Your Honor

Broadcast:

Showtime (in Israel Bite)

The American adaptation of the Israeli series, uses some points from the existing idea in favor of a new plot, and in the process heals some of the ailments of the original.

The plot, copied from Be'er Sheva to New Orleans, tells the story of Michael Desiato, a respected judge (Brian Cranston) whose teenage son, Adam, is involved in a hit-and-run accident.

A series of considerations lead him to try to hide the evidence and traces that could lead to his son, making him part of the conspiracy and potentially hurting his mayoral campaign.

The series is made excellent, incredibly aesthetically pleasing and from time to time a particularly appealing whip flashes through it. It may not be great wisdom to demonstrate professionalism when the budget is several times greater, but his new "honor" is beyond that. Despite the plot outline similar to the Israeli, as well as the interesting moral dilemma, the small details are different and make all the difference. First and foremost, and it's important to emphasize how critical this is, Hunter Dohan ("Truth Be Told"), who plays Adam, passes as a credible teenager whose conscience torments him, and does not look like a senior citizen recruited for it.

Beyond that, topical echoes like violent cops with a racial element, resonate directly with Black Lives Matter and allow the series to dim its distinct resemblance to other prestige works, chief among them - by the very presence of Cranston - "Breaking Bad". Even if "His Honor" does not line up with groundbreaking works that preceded it, and it does not, the series is definitely solid,Intriguing and doing kindness with a story that deserved a more successful execution.

מצאה זווית עקומה חדשה. "משלחת חיפוש"(צילום: HBO מקס)

42. משלחת חיפוש

שם מקורי: Search Party

41. Heels

Jack (Stephen Amal, "The Arrow") accepts responsibility for the league, after his father - its founder and one of its biggest stars - puts an end to his life, amid the difficulties of his life project to rise.

This is how Jack's life, himself a star in the arena, becomes one in which reality and fiction collide time and time again.

The difficulties of life itself mingle with those of the show, and the same is true of the other protagonists of "Heels," small and large, ambitious and innocent.

These constant mixes of truth and falsehood make the relationships between the characters fascinating, inside and outside the arena, constantly raising the question of who they really are: Good (Face) or Bad (Heel).

And since these are absolute and nuanced concepts, it is the vibrations between them that make "Heels" sweeping, and in quite a few cases also exciting.
