North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU)

encourages

citizens to understand further foreseeable corona loads in 2022. "We are doing everything for the speedy return to normality, but we as politicians have to be honest: Corona will be us too very busy and demanding in the new year «, said the chairman of the conference of ministers presidents (MPK) of the German press agency in Düsseldorf. »Restrictions in everyday life will remain necessary in the new year as well. Omikron is a whole new dimension of challenge. "

When asked whether he could avoid a zigzag course in the fight against pandemics with a stronger orientation towards scientific recommendations, the head of government of the CDU / FDP coalition replied: »With a reliable, straightforward course we can do this with the people Trust that we will need in the months to come.

And yet we will continue to learn more as this pandemic progresses. "

In these weeks, the aim is to significantly reduce contacts again.

Also masks and the well-known hygiene measures would accompany the citizens for months, said Wüst.

"The booster vaccinations and any other vaccinations are the most important building block in fighting the pandemic."

Nevertheless, there is definitely hope that the pandemic will end. "The availability of enough vaccine gives us the chance to protect ourselves well." Unfortunately, the strategy has not yet worked as originally hoped. "The low vaccination rate in some parts of Germany has thwarted our plans so far," said the MPK chairman. The only way out of the pandemic is through vaccinations. "I hope that the compulsory vaccination will come quickly and that it will also contribute to social pacification."

The nationwide seven-day incidence of new corona infections has fallen again.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Saturday morning, the value was 242.9.

The day before it was still at 265.8, a week ago at 321.8.

As the RKI further announced, citing data from the health authorities, 22,214 new infections were recorded within 24 hours.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the health authorities have reported a total of 6,981,281 cases.

The institute put the number of people recovered from illness caused by the coronavirus in Germany at around 6,087,300.

The total number of corona deaths in Germany rose by 157 to 110,276.

The seven-day incidence indicates the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within a week.

The value rose rapidly from the beginning of November.

As a result, new highs were recorded every day.

The number has been falling again since December.

In the government, however, there are great concerns about another wave of infections due to the spread of the much more contagious Omicron variant.

According to the latest RKI weekly report from Thursday, the variant has now been proven in all federal states.

The RKI also warned that "less test and reporting activity" can be expected during the holidays and at the turn of the year.

Accordingly, the official data could only provide an "incomplete picture of the epidemiological situation" in Germany.

In November, the federal and state governments set the so-called hospitalization incidence as the decisive yardstick for tightening the corona measures.

This value indicates how many people per 100,000 inhabitants are in hospital within seven days because of a corona infection.

From a value of three, the 2G rule applies across the board for events in a federal state - that is, only those

vaccinated

against the

corona

virus and

those recovered

from Covid-19 are allowed.

According to the RKI, the nationwide hospitalization incidence on Thursday was 4.55.

For its Corona aid, the EU has raised less money on the capital market this year than originally targeted. As the commission of the German Press Agency confirmed, not as many bonds were issued as planned. This is due to the fact that there was less demand for payments and the financing requirements for 2021 have therefore been adjusted. Nevertheless, the commission will have sufficient funds in the future to make all payments, said a spokeswoman. A total of 71 billion euros was issued in bonds. Originally 80 billion euros were planned to finance the first Corona aid in 2021.

For the first time, the bonds issued included environmentally friendly “green bonds” valued at 12 billion euros.

The money is intended to finance only climate-friendly projects in the EU countries as part of their development plans, such as research projects on the energy transition or wind farms.

Around a third of the Corona development program is to be financed through green bonds.

The EU's corona development program provides for aid worth a total of around 800 billion euros until 2026 - in prices adjusted to inflation.

The money is intended to help cope with the economic damage caused by the pandemic.

Above all, projects are to be funded that promote a more environmentally friendly and digital economy.

The program is financed through debts that are to be repaid jointly by 2058.

In order to receive the aid, member states have to present a plan with concrete investment and reform projects. The EU Commission has already adopted 22 plans this year. Poland and Hungary's plans have not yet been confirmed, due to concerns over the rule of law, among other things. The plans of Sweden and Bulgaria are also still pending. The Netherlands has not yet presented a plan as they did not have a government until recently. Germany has already received a first tranche from the Corona development fund and is to receive a total of around 25.6 billion euros.

In the first six months of next year, the commission plans to issue bonds worth 50 billion euros to finance the reconstruction program through the sale of environmentally friendly and conventional bonds.

This is to be topped up by selling short-term EU bonds.

In view of the sharp rise in Omikron infections, more than 4,500 flights have been canceled over the Christmas holidays worldwide.

Almost 10,000 started late on Friday.

This is reported by the website FlightAware, which tracks flights worldwide.

After a year of crisis, British pubs are still struggling with economic worries, despite extensive freedoms in England. "December is a crucial month for our industry," said a spokesman for the British Beer and Pub Association of the dpa. But the Corona variant Omikron leaves many doubts on a social evening in the pub. "In many companies, the Christmas parties have been canceled or significantly reduced."

For some guests, this may also be due to the fact that not very much is being done in British pubs to prevent corona outbreaks. The British do not want to know anything about 3G or even 2G and similar obligations to provide evidence in the catering industry and the recently tightened mask requirement still does not apply in pubs or restaurants. The British Pub Association assures that pubs are still safe places, but at the same time admits: "Fewer people come to the pub when Corona measures such as masks, vaccination certificates and other apply."

Quite a number of pubs have given up completely after the long odyssey of lockdowns and partial openings. The management consultancy AlixPartners found out on the basis of a database of the licensed companies in Great Britain: The number of pubs has decreased by 8.6 percent since the outbreak of the pandemic up to September this year, around 9,900 companies had to give up. On average, 550 pubs closed their doors for good every month. It was particularly difficult for independent pubs that were not part of larger chains.

"These numbers are a powerful reminder that the removal of all restrictions in July will not mark the end of the challenges," said Graeme Smith of AlixPartners.

In the summer there were additional problems such as a shortage of workers, which made it difficult for the pubs to quickly get their business going again.

Shortly before Christmas, the Ministry of Finance put together an emergency aid package in the light of Omikron, which some catering establishments described as "essential to life" and others as a drop in the ocean.
