Emmy-winning filmmaker Jean-Marc and Ella died unexpectedly last night.

Canadian director Jean-Marc Valla passed away last night (Sunday) unexpectedly at just 58 years old. The Deadline Hollywood website reports a borrower died in his cabin outside Quebec leaving his friends and family stunned. He is survived by his two sons, Alex and Emil, as well as two sisters and a brother.
Ella was a filmmaker, editor and screenwriter who became famous in recent years for directing the mini-series "Big Little Lies" (in the first season) and "Sharp Objects." On the first one even won my Emmy for directing a mini-series. Even before that, his films had won many praises and decorations. His 1995 debut film, "Black List", was nominated for nine Ginny Awards, the Canadian Oscars, including for directing and editing Valais. He made his breakthrough into the global mainstream in his fourth feature film, "CRAZY" from 2005, which won additional accolades and is considered one of the best Canadian films of all time, according to the critics' choice at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival.
In 2009 Valais directed the film "Young Victoria", which received three Oscar nominations, and in 2011 "Cafe de Flor", the film with the most nominations for the Ginny Award that year.
In 2013, Valla directed his first American film, "The Dallas Customer Club," starring Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, who both won Oscars for their roles.
And Ella himself was nominated for an Oscar for his editing in the film.
A year later he directed the film "Going Far" starring Reese Witherspoon, with whom he worked three years later on the first season of "Big Little Lies" on HBO, which won him the Emmy Award.
And these went on to another mini-series on HBO, "Sharp Objects," which also won much acclaim.

The HBO cable network also issued a statement following his death: "" Jean-Marc Valla was a very brilliant and dedicated filmmaker, a truly phenomenal talent who instilled deep emotional truth into every scene.
He was also a very caring man who invested his whole being alongside every actor he directed.
"We are shocked to learn of his sudden death, and we express our heartfelt sympathy to his sons, Alex and Emil, to his extended family and longtime producer partner, Nathan Ross."
