10. For all mankind

Original Name:

For All Mankind

Broadcast:

for better or worse, and as its name implies, "For All Mankind" gives a heavy-headed, massive, sometimes slow and old-school feel.

Often the series, which simulates an alternate reality in which the Russians preceded the Americans into space in 1969, feels as if it itself was created during the period its plot describes.

As is usually the case with works on astronauts made fearless, and certainly in works on the United States' attempts to lead the world forward, it is often pompous.

But, and this is part of the beauty and cosmic piyyut of "For All Mankind", the series transcends the astronauts who inhabit it: on the one hand they slowly drag themselves in a cumbersome space suit at zero gravity, on the other hand they do so in a levitation that simulates the lightness of a ballerina.

As the series progresses, it becomes clear how good it is to look at things from different perspectives, to be one thing and at the same time another thing.

On the one hand you are weak for whole decades, and on the other hand faithful to the way her protagonists develop and look at things differently with the passage of time.

But what makes “For All Mankind” is the way it harnesses its protagonists in favor of the big story, in an inseparable bond that radiates on itself.

In nuances it describes how humanity, for its flaws and ambition, detaches from the ground and rushes into space, bringing there the same explosive charges, literally, and private and collective history.

Like those brave ones who set out into the great black void, so too does the series explore new territories, inspiring and anxious at the same time, both in heaven and on earth.

9. Girls forever

Original name:

Girls5eva

Broadcast:

Peacock (in Israel Bite and Hot) is

a little

outraged at

how negligible this series is, which deals with members of a girls' band from the late 1990s trying to make a comeback. Doesn't help that Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, creators of "Rock 30" and "Kimi Schmidt," are its producers, and that it is one of the funniest and smartest series of the year. Even such and such nominations for my mother she did not earn. The touch of the two is well felt throughout the eight episodes of the series: the endless dizziness of jokes, the freaky contours, the incessant references to pop culture, the heroines who walk the line between wretched and wineries - "Girls Forever" includes these and is seasoned with a collection of ripping songs.

All the "Girls Forever" women are wonderful, and two of them in particular: First, Sarah Brailis.

The singer and creator who became famous thanks to sweet and forgotten pop songs, is doing her first significant acting role here, and it's an impressive surprise.

But the show is stolen by Rene Alice Goldsbury ("Hamilton"), who marvels at playing the big, full-fledged star herself.

This one with the huge talent that everyone thought she would embark on a huge solo career.

The one who will always juggle her voice to overshadow her bandmates and emphasize how much she's better.

Goldsbury's career is very respectable but it was not exactly a name familiar to the general public.

Her performance here is phenomenal, and the fact that it happens in a series about middle-aged women who carve for themselves a second chance at fame - feels appropriate and poetic.

8. Loki

Original name:

Loki

Broadcast:

Disney Plus (has not yet arrived in Israel) The

great uniqueness of "Loki" in Marvel's creative landscape is the courage to deal with the not-so-"heroic" issue of remorse, of mental reckoning, of an character's attempt to correct its flaws. Certainly when her protagonist is an iconic villain. Loki has always been the sidekick, the sad clown. Even as the great villain of the "Avengers" he was still like that. "Loki" shows us a character who is unable to understand herself. Trapped in the "lofty goal" of destruction and devastation, she crashes again and again, fails and betrays all her lovers, can not be saved from herself even though she knows she is leading herself to hell. The way out of the tangle is a journey of self-discovery, which wisely involves a whole world of lying characters and layers of smoke screens. This is a fascinating storytelling tool that presents all the characters with the same challenge:They all grope in the dark to figure out who they really are and who is responsible for the situation they are in.

The culmination of this journey in itself, including the great love story at its center, is enough to make "Loki" the best Marvel series to date by a margin, but the bonus it provides in an exceptional ending episode.

Without a spoiler, this is the best proof that the lazy stencil of screaming villains, lightning and computerized effects, is really not a necessity in hero stories.

In less than an hour, "Loki" not only closes all the ends of her wire wisely and opens a huge window for the future, but presents the world with a clever, scary and sophisticated villain who distills her game of illusions, lies and difficult choices.

It is this journey, the change, the growth of the characters in front of us, that makes "Loki" such a fun and special creation.

7. The white lotus

Original Name:

The White Lotus

Broadcast:

HBO (In Israel Bite, Hot and Cellcom TV)

Although it ostensibly includes all the features of the "Big Little Lies" format (sparkling cast, spectacular views, quality soundtrack and plot centered on a groundbreaking event, the way to which we Gradually revealed), "The White Lotus" is actually a satire on her and her example. Spanish composer Cristobal Tapia de Weir has created for the series aggressive tribal melodies, which accompany us from the opening to stormy arguments, sensational discoveries or moments of tension. This perpetual dissonance is creator Mike White's first triple finger towards the genre. Instead of trying to shave off the flagship indie hit, "The White Lotus" almost teases us to look away or fiddle with the phone.

For White, the very white and affluent heroes of the series are a tool for witty, annoying (in the good sense of course) and mostly effective class gaps. At times this clash is blatant, petty and demonstrative, but in other and no less pleasurable cases, it is completely devoid of self-awareness. Thus, Paula, Olivia's teenage girlfriend, has to deal time and time again with the feelings of a young black woman taken on vacation by a rich white family, unable to see her own privilege even when she looks at her in the mirror. These first world problems suddenly take on a different twist. The more dramatic they are, the more insignificant, detached and spoiled they seem.

Although this is the paper in the comedy, it's hard to say that "White Lotus" is bursting with laughter.

She has quite a few flashes, some of which sneak up on us almost by surprise, but her main strength is the dynamics between the various characters and the constant feeling of mesmerizing discomfort.

Thankfully, the great casting delivers a host of outstanding performances.

The gameplay and tensions between the various characters are so effective that the big secret takes a marginal place in the overall happening.

As if to prove that the series can do without it.

Netflix

drama, based on a bestseller of the same name, tells the story of Alex (Margaret Cavalli, "The Remainers," "There Were Times in Hollywood"), a single mother who escapes an abusive relationship with her 3-year-old daughter , Madi, and finds a job as a maid to survive. Through Alex's eyes we are exposed to the bureaucratic, abrasive and ruthless circle of a life of poverty. The absurdity of which in order to be eligible for assistance to income-deprived victims of violence, Alex is required to find work. Here, too, a clever artistic choice enters the picture, in which the forms that flood Alex from every direction become edited headlines: "white garbage," "Social Security parasite," and so on. The stigmas she feared return to haunt her from the subconscious.

Despite the frustrating motifs that accompany it throughout, what makes it possible to succeed the "maid" and turn it into an exciting and purifying series is a tiny glimmer of hope.

Even in the many dark moments along it, he never disappeared.

One reason for this is the good people who get in Alex's way, the empathy that can be found in even the greatest abysses, the determination and belief in human power to climb out of content and the great power of family.

Another reason is the unusual connection between Alex and Madi.

With clever writing and heartwarming and heartbreaking scenes, the series distills this connection with nature walks, car trips and encounters with others.

The power that draws Alex from Maddie to continue nonetheless, is also what fills us in while watching.

And of course it does not hurt at all that Riley Prophet Witt, who plays the girl, is a heartbreaking block of cuteness, who manages to put a smile on her face even if only a moment ago they were filled with tears.

5. Only Murders in The Building

Broadcast:

Hollow (has not yet arrived in Israel) The

closest, but inaccurate, parallel of "Only Murders in the Building" is to the excellent "American hooligan": on the one hand a parody of real crime works, and on the other a true crime story series itself, which refers To him too abysmal.

But while "American Hooligan" settled for cock graffiti, the series' three protagonists - an aging TV star whose glorious days are far behind him (Steve Martin), a colorful and impoverished entrepreneur and producer whose career is full of resounding failures (Martin Short) and a reclusive young woman with a mysterious past ) - do go out to investigate a murder that took place in the apartment building where they live.

Their attempts to surpass the identity of the killer, they document in a podcast that they hope will become a hit like the works they themselves are addicted to.

The most striking thing about "Only Murders in the Building" is the thin line it creates between an awareness of the pathos of its protagonists, and the real enthusiasm created by the riddle they are trying to solve.

Thus she manages to reconcile the huge generational gap between the two men in their seventies plus, and Gomez who has yet to celebrate her thirtieth birthday.

Beneath all this pulsates, as mentioned, an intriguing and well-made investigative story in its own right.

The series has built a fantastic puzzle.

Whenever she seemed to be going in one direction, she turned great and went in another direction.

These were not twists for the sake of the twists, but ones that radiated differently into her heroes and villains and deepened them, so using them was a clever tool designed to empower them as well.

And that’s an important word, “empower,” because the series loves its characters, and although they can sometimes be a bit ridiculous, it still characterizes them with the humanity and soul that have regularly expanded the mind.

4. Bridgerton

Original Name:

Bridgerton

Broadcast:

Netflix

on the face of it "Bridgerton" is not the kind of content we are used to getting from Shonda Reims.

It is not a melodrama rooted in a rough, contemporary (and American) world, but a link in a chain of delightful period British soaps such as "Downton Mansion," "Belgravia," and "Foldark."

She mentions them all in one way or another, but also differs from them in the offensive.

"Bridgerton" is much hotter than the routine period drama. As befits the period she describes, the early 19th century, she does not do so through blatant sexuality. On the contrary, it illustrates to us how gestures that to our eyes are perfectly fair and innocent - like a suitor publicly clamping a cuff on a girl's sleeve - are likened to a passionate kiss, weaving subdued erotica from the empty air. "Bridgerton" describes it with a certain amount of irony, but also with an intense affection that is hard not to get sucked into. As in a relationship, the more the series progresses, the more liberating it becomes - conversations become bolder and eventually lovers are also swept away by their passions. At the heart of all this, of course, is the pair of heroes. The connection between them is slowly formed and consistently deceives, which claims the whole series in electricity and magic.

Even those who are not fans of the creator will find "Bridgerton" fun and addictive.

Maybe because it settles for eight episodes per season, maybe because it is based on an existing book, maybe because depending on the season of leaving for the company - which takes place in the spring months - it all blooms, blooms and abounds in a way that is hard to resist.

3. The Beatles: Get Back

Broadcast:

Disney Plus (has not yet arrived in Israel)

In one of the most astonishing moments in the first episode of "The Beatles: Get Buck", Michael Lindsay-Hogg's cameras focus on Paul McCartney while he plays the guitar, trying to create a new song from the random sounds.

Like a three-dimensional sculpture of the material and creating from it something new, gradually grows from this trial and error something that will very quickly become iconic, the song that gave the mini-series its name.

This is an amazing scene that actually reflects the whole series, as well as its creative process. Peter Jackson, the trilogy-loving director ("Lord of the Rings," "The Hobbit") who revamped and edited the series, insists that all the raw materials pointed to a different narrative than we previously knew about this period in the band's life. We all thought it was a chronicle of disintegration, but in fact - beyond the dramatic moments like George Harrison's resignation - John, Paul, George and Ringo were happy most of the time and showed a lot of love, which is what he reflects on in the series. It is a very specific, even manipulative, cinematic choice, and yet it is hard not to indulge in it.

Because yes, it was a lousy time with murky emotions, and not for nothing did the Beatles fall apart a year later, but it also indeed floods the connection and special friendships that were between them, the tremendous talent and mutual fertilization that will never be restored in solo careers.

Fifty years and a bit later, we see the Beatles like we've never seen them before, and it's unbelievably exciting.

This series is a cultural event that will be enshrined in the annals of the Beatles, and therefore of pop culture.

2. Sin

Original Name:

It's a Sin

Broadcast:

British Channel 4 (Israel Bite)

"Sin" begins in 1981, just 14 years after homosexuality ceased to be a criminal offense in the UK, centered on three gays and a group of friends accompanying them, who gathered in the big city of London to live. Their lives are far from crooked looks and fears. The way the series describes them is incredibly sweeping and endearing. In fact, "sin" just makes us fall in love with them.

But this is of course a honey trap. The series presents all this as a nostalgic picture of unknown joy, freedom and exploding potential. And all this time, the huge love of life of the characters stands unknowingly in front of a terrifying, tragic and inevitable glacier - AIDS. We do not even have to wait for him to arrive, his menacing shadow is already obscured in the hilarious first episode, even if the protagonists themselves are not yet aware of it. And when each of them individually, optimistically and promisingly, is then asked where he sees himself in five and ten years, the heart begins to crack.

Not for nothing is the series called as it is called (originally "It's a Sin", named after the beautiful song by the Pat Shop Boys).

She argues that had it not been for the shame and guilt involved, and yet, in the LGBT lifestyle, many of those who were infected and infected would have behaved more openly and honestly with each other, thus saving human lives. And delightful to watch despite the painful subject, it is not only devoted to grief and difficulty. It also emphasizes and above all the beauty, celebrating the lives of these guys and their peers.

Celebrates the lives of those who are not.
