A sock hat, a long coat and a burglar bar?

Forget about the way you imagine car thieves.

Today they do it mostly using sophisticated and very simple-looking technological equipment - get to know the cellular jammers, the number one burglary tool for professional car thieves.

POINTER's operational set-up summarizes the data for 2021 in the field of car thefts.

The data show two areas that continue to characterize vehicle thefts and another area whose use is expanding, precisely due to the series of successes of law enforcement agencies in catching sophisticated thief squads.

But just before that, a brief explanation of the reasons behind the jump in car thefts.

After the multi-closure 2020, with a minority of commuters, fewer tin accidents, more people in homes, fewer cars parked in open parking lots and a police presence at roadblocks, comes the year 2021 when life began to return to a kind of routine.

All the components mentioned earlier are repeated and with them the car thefts.

When more cars return to cover higher mileage than in the past year and need more mechanical spare parts, more accidents are made that increase the demand for spare parts, with quite a few workers returning to work and leaving the cars for hours as "easy prey" for thieves - they are quick to respond.

How to steal, what to steal and from where?

The first area in which a trend that has been observed for several years continues is the demand for Jeeps and SUVs.

Those that are gaining high popularity also in the private market and consequently also demand for body parts and mechanical parts for these cars.

In 2021 there has been a 13 per cent increase in the theft attempts of these and they constitute 41 per cent of the total theft attempts.

Regular cars from a variety of segments, from mini cars to large and luxury family cars are in second place with 24 percent of thefts (down 26 percent), commercial and two-wheeled vehicles with 11 percent each and trucks with 10 percent.

The rest of the list also includes vehicles (2 percent) and other vehicles (single percent).

In terms of geographical preference, the Sharon region is the main victim of theft, due to its proximity to the seam line.

Reducing the range towards car slaughterhouses in the West Bank and the ease with which car thieves can bring the loot there makes their work significantly easier.

It is followed by the central and southern region with 24 and 17 percent.

The Shephelah, Jerusalem and the northern region close the list with 9, 7 and 5 percent respectively.

By the way, the blow that follows this story, which is the rise in car insurance prices, will be felt the next time you come to renew your car insurance.

The insurance price comparison company "Web" has already identified a 3-7 percent increase in the insurance prices of popular cars like the Hyundai i10 or Kia Sportage and this is just the beginning.

In terms of theft methods, that of key duplication is still the most common. This is done by connecting to the OBD socket in the vehicle and creating a "new" key using the vehicle computer settings while canceling the previous keys. This method is responsible for 42 percent of theft attempts. In second place is what is defined as a "violent attack" - a physical disconnection of the vehicle's computer and the connection of another computer in its place.

In these two cases, the most advanced and common tool available to car thieves today is often used - a cellular jammer.

The device used by the relatively sophisticated gangs of thieves produces a "masking" of cellular signals and GPS in its vicinity.

Most often, these devices are designed to "buy" the squad of thieves long enough to do the job before transmitting a distress signal to the hotspots.

Currently, the solution to this type of disruption is to use separate communication networks and transmitters that at the moment of detection of an attempt to activate such a disruption alert at the first and critical stage of the disruption attempt and then switch to an alternate frequency in an attempt to overcome the disruption.

Further down the list is the theft of keys from the customer's home, usually after a burglary with 10 percent of the cases.

Licensed theft, in which the key is duplicated while the vehicle was in his possession and had access to the coder accounted for 7 percent of the cases and 2 percent of the thefts are committed by robbery and theft of a motor vehicle, many times during an accident day or while refueling.
