A major cause of maternal mortality in France, preeclampsia is a serious but still too little known complication of pregnancy occurring in 2% to 5% of pregnant women, with nearly 40,000 cases per year.
This anomaly in the development of the placenta, the main risk factors of which are obesity, diabetes, smoking or pre-existing arterial hypertension, leads to a decrease in the physiological functions of exchanges between the mother and the fetus: insufficiently vascularized, the placenta poorly irrigates the fetus and releases toxic molecules.
The mother's body compensates by an increase in blood pressure with a risk of failure of all her organs, including the liver and kidneys.
The development of the fetus is also impaired, with growth retardation in utero and a high rate of prematurity (one third of very premature births), responsible for significant neonatal mortality.
