Officials in Xi'an dismissed due to the corona outbreak
6.41 a.m.:
In connection with the coronavirus outbreak in the Chinese metropolis of Xi'an, two senior Communist Party officials there have been removed from their posts.
According to the city administration, the move should ensure that efforts to "epidemic prevention and control" are increased, as reported by the local media.
A complete lockdown has been in effect in Xi'an for two weeks.
The number of new infections in the city of 13 million people has now fallen.
On Monday, the authorities announced 90 new cases of infection.
There were 122 on Sunday and 174 on Saturday. Since December 9, more than 1,600 cases of corona infection have been recorded in Xi'an.
Most of the shops in Xi'an, home of the world-famous Terracotta Army, are closed and shopping is only allowed every three days.
Most recently, the rules have been tightened even further: Many residents have been told that they can only leave the house to be tested for the corona virus.
Xi'an is fighting the largest corona outbreak in China in months.
Although the number of cases of infection in China is still negligible compared to other countries, the authorities are taking rigorous action against new outbreaks.
Authorities are keen to contain the virus before the Beijing Winter Olympics begin in February.
Seven-day incidence increases significantly
03.43 a.m.:
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports 18,518 new corona infections within 24 hours.
That's 4610 more cases than on Monday a week ago when 13,908 positive tests were reported.
The nationwide seven-day incidence rose to 232.4 from 222.7 the previous day.
The value indicates how many people per 100,000 inhabitants have been infected with the corona virus in the past seven days.
68 other people died related to the virus.
This increases the number of reported deaths within one day to 112,223.
In total, more than 7.2 million corona tests have so far been positive in Germany.
The RKI points out that fewer tests will be carried out at the turn of the year and therefore fewer cases will probably be reported.
Secretary of Defense tested positive
02.20 a.m.:
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin tested positive for Covid-19 with slight symptoms.
"As my doctor explained to me, my full vaccination status - and the booster vaccination I received in early October - meant that the infection was much milder than it would otherwise have been," says Austin.
The last time he met President Joe Biden was on December 21, more than a week before he began to experience symptoms.
Survey: majority distrust corona numbers
00.00 a.m.:
According to a survey, a majority of German citizens distrust the current corona numbers, which depict the infection process in Germany.
According to a representative Insa survey by »Bild«, 57 percent of the participants say no to the question of whether they still trust the official infection figures.
Only 32 percent believe that the data from the Robert Koch Institute are correct.
A narrow majority of 51 percent is currently not satisfied with the federal government's corona crisis management.
On the other hand, 41 percent are satisfied with it.
58 percent of those questioned are in favor of a general vaccination requirement, 34 percent of them reject it.
