So far, the AMG models from Mercedes have been known primarily for their loud sound.

With the EQS, however, you now strike quieter notes.

Affalterbach - So far, the AMG models had extremely striking core values.

On the one hand, the design was more raucous than reserved and, together with the rumbling sound, an almost perfect symbiosis for all customers who wanted to show where the hammer is.

An AMG 45 doesn't make a big difference to the magnificent top model AMG GT Black Series.

Those who wanted it more cautiously stepped into one or the other competitor or sat down with a clear conscience in the likewise magnificently motorized series models with the star.

Almost everything will be different with electromobility, and the AMG EQS 53, which costs at least 152,552 euros, will be the first to feel this, as reported by 24auto.de.

(Changeover for AMG fans: That's why the Mercedes sports brand is taking a softer note)

Even if the one-box limousine has a few sporty details here and there and the sportiest electric model from the current stars and stripes with its training dress clearly shows that it stands for dynamic propulsion, it is a completely normal EQS.

The two currently available EQS 450/580 versions are already magnificently motorized, although optical extras such as powerful spoiler ornaments or flared fenders are also missing on the AMG top model.

Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4matic in the test: the difference to the normal EQS is barely noticeable

The driving performance of the EQS-AMG is not only speechless at the first visual contact, although it is not allowed to wear the prestigious 63 nomenclature on the rear. The two electric motors on the front and rear axles produce a generous 484 kW / 658 hp and a maximum torque of 950 Nm. As if that weren't sporty enough, the Dynamic Plus package gives you an impressive boost to 560 kW, 761 hp and up to 1,020 Nm.

The thrust from a standing start as well as from almost any other speed can only be described as tremendous.

One step on the right pedal almost derails your facial features and suddenly presses the occupants into the very good leather seats, as if you were in a formula racing car.

The problem with this: In normal driving mode and even significantly beyond that, the AMG difference to the anything but limp motorized Mercedes EQS 580 4matic is barely noticeable.

A must: The standard all-wheel drive, which distributes the drive torque variably between the front and rear axles depending on the driving situation.

The torque is measured 160 times per second and set if necessary.

Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4matic put to the test: artificial soundscapes instead of thunderous sounds

From a standing start, depending on the driving program and the charge status of the 107.8 kWh battery, it goes from a standing start to 100 km / h in 3.4 to 3.8 seconds. But the weaker brother without AMG insignia gives you 4.3 seconds likewise all possibilities.

After all: While the standard EQS is slowed down too early at 210 km / h compared to most of its competitors, the EQS AMG can roar at 250 km / h.

(Mercedes EQS: up to 770 km range - but the top speed is surprising)

AMG customers have to forego the usual rumbling sounds with the EQS.

Unfortunately or fortunately without the thundering sound staccato that gave the models from Affalterbach so far this unmistakable charm that delighted so many customers.

Now, as with the Porsche Taycan or Audi E-Tron GT, the propulsion can be accompanied by artificial soundscapes in the style of a warp drive.

But most customers should banish the Captain Future sound to Cylons and Klingons and prefer to jet through the worlds casually and dynamically without disturbing background noise.

Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4matic in the test: Sport version offers hardly any added value

It is precisely the notable difference that is missing and here the 5.22-meter-long Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 shares the fate of its less luxurious competitors Audi E-Tron GT, Porsche Taycan or the aging Tesla Model S. The real added value that the sports version offers its potential customers visually and technically is manageable.

Technical data for the Mercedes-AMG EQS 53

Motor / drive

And to ensure open mouths against a Plaid-Model-S or a Lucid at the regulars' table of the Los Angeles Country Club, even the Boost available 761 HP are not enough, because the competitors from the USA China offer just as absurd 1,000 HP or more.

Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4matic in the test: 20 minutes of charging for a range of 300 kilometers

In addition, the Mercedes EQS, even as a noble 53 AMG version, lacks the nobility of equipment with which a Mercedes S-Class spoils its customers in everyday life.

The greatest strength remains the excellent overall package with a lot of comfort, limitless thrust and lots of long-distance qualities.

The coordination of springs and dampers with air assistance and electronic control is successful and, if you listen carefully, it is an octave more sporty than with the EQS 450/580.

Good: the standard all-wheel steering.

But there are hardly any really big differences for driver and passengers to experience.

You will be pleased with the generous amount of space, the numerous driver assistance and comfort functions and, especially in the non-European markets, will probably miss the missing long version as well as fully electric comfort seats in the rear.

Here, the Mercedes S-Class in the AMG version that will follow in 2022 as a power hybrid is simply unrivaled.

But the AMG EQS can not only be sporty, but also efficient.

With a standard consumption of 21.1 to 24.3 kWh / 100 km, significantly more than 500 kilometers are possible with one battery charge.

The electric luxury model from Sindelfingen can be powered by a fast charger for the next 300 kilometers in 20 minutes.

In the event of emergency braking, the recuperation power is a mighty 300 kW, which significantly extends the range.
