Defect: Mercedes-Benz recalls more than 800,000 vehicles worldwide

Hundreds of thousands of Mercedes have to go to the workshop. But repairs will take time due to a lack of spare parts. Owners should drive their cars as little as possible - the risk of fire cannot be ruled out.

Risk of fire due to a technical defect: the car manufacturer Daimler has recalled more than 800,000 vehicles worldwide.

The reason is a possible leak in the coolant pump, which could cause components to heat up.

According to a report in the "Bild" newspaper, the company sent a corresponding letter to the car owners who are affected by the defect.

A Daimler spokesman did not confirm the number of vehicles on request, but named the affected series of diesel models of the SUV GLE, GLS, GLC and G-Class as well as of the C, E and S-Class.

The cars were produced between January 2017 and October 2021.

240,000 vehicles are affected in Germany.

In the letter from the passenger car subsidiary Mercedes-Benz, it was stated that it had been found that the coolant pump, which can be controlled via negative pressure, could have a leak between the coolant and negative pressure circuit in the vehicles.

Therefore, coolant can enter the negative pressure circuit.

And as a result, a rise in the component temperature "up to a risk of fire" cannot be completely ruled out.

Therefore, in addition to a software update, the electrical switching valve must be replaced.

But since there is currently a lack of spare parts, the repairs could not be carried out immediately, it said.

Appointments in the workshops are not yet possible.

Until then, the affected vehicles would have to "be driven particularly carefully and use restricted to the necessary minimum." The first batch of repairs is planned for mid to late January.

As a result of the corona pandemic, Mercedes-Benz is also affected by a shortage of spare parts.

Numerous car manufacturers were unable to restart production last autumn because of the corona outbreaks.

Bottlenecks in the production of semiconductors, which are required for chips, are also causing problems for the industry.
