Electric cars are making their way onto the roads in Italy: in 2021 they doubled thanks also to the eco-incentives put in place by the government. The Pev (Plug-in Electric Vehicle) that is the sum of the battery cars (Bev) and the electric plug-in hybrid ones (Phev) jumped by 128%, with almost 137 thousand registrations. Motus-E, the association that brings together all the stakeholders of electric mobility, highlights it but says it is concerned about the non-renewal of the bonus to the sector, suggesting, instead, a structural intervention, a planning for the next three years, especially in the prospect of the abandonment in 2035 of cars with diesel and petrol engines with a view to cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

The global market in Italy closed 2021 with 1,457,952 registrations (+ 5.5% compared to 2020), recording historic lows in December with only 87,338 cars sold (over 27% less than the previous year), while the electric reached a record market share of 13.5%, Motus-E points out. In particular, 67,255 battery electric cars were registered last year (+ 107% on 2020) and 69,499 Phevs (+ 154%). Cars with plugs, the association explains, account for 9.3% of the total market, against 4.3% the previous year. The Fiat 500E with 10,720 units is confirmed as the best-selling electric battery in Italy in 2021, followed by the Smart Fortwo, the Renault Twingo, the Dacia Spring which parades fourth place to the Tesla Model 3,which however is the leading electric model of sales in wealthy Switzerland last year. In December, the Pevs also went "in the red": those registered recorded a decrease of 13% compared to December 2020, with 11,833 units sold.

6,158 (-15%) battery electric cars were registered while plug-in hybrids were 5,675 (-11%), explains Motus-E, according to which "the delivery delays due to delivery delays contributed to the negative trend at the end of the year. to the crisis of raw materials, semiconductors and microchips, the possibility of registering cars purchased by booking the eco-bonus by June 2022 and the end of the incentives for electric cars, which took place in October 2021, which together with the failure to program them for the three years to come are of concern to the market and the entire supply chain ". If there is no "further support - warns the association - it is plausible to hypothesize a dramatic reduction in registrations of electric and plug-in hybrid cars in 2022". Then there is no purchase bonusit is the risk that "the few electric vehicles produced in Italy will be diverted to more attractive markets". Motus-E therefore hopes "another intervention by Mise and Mef at the beginning of this year".
