Lauterbach runs - our Corona weekly overview

2022-01-07T13:08:32.084Z

Where is the omicron defense? School chaos reloaded. And current developments from research: our Corona weekly overview.

Timo Lenzen / DER SPIEGEL

Dear readers,

it is remarkable.

On the one hand, it confirms what scientists predicted weeks ago: the Omicron wave is more of a wall, as shown by the infection figures from countries particularly affected by the new wave, such as England or the USA.

The virus is now also becoming dominant in Germany (read more about this here), when the wall will be back in our country is only a question of the (presumably short) time.

On the other hand, the measures with which German politics intends to counter this threat seem surprisingly slack. At today's MPK, decisions are more likely to be discussed than in the past, such as expanding the restrictions for gastronomy from 2G to 2G plus. Hard contact restrictions? Lockdown? No result (you can find an overview of the possible measures here).

Instead, it will probably also be about shortening the quarantine in which infected people have to go.

Because, as studies show, Omicron infected people are obviously contagious for a much shorter time.

At the same time, the biggest problem in the countries particularly affected by the variant is not the severity of the course and the resulting overloaded health system, but rather the fact that too many people are (mildly) ill at the same time and then have to remain in quarantine.

At least for the vaccinated population, Omikron seems to become a virus light in most cases.

Perhaps that is why there is a strategy behind the poor measures.

Lauterbach, so far more of a lockdown apologist, loosens up - and lets Omikron solve the problem of herd immunity.
