Road test: Toyota Yaris Cross (petrol)
Toyota Yaris has an elevated and fashionable brother, his name is Yaris Cross and not like romantic comedies, the business between us started with an immediate click, but the relationship deteriorated when we started dating regularly

Not the first draft that came up with this patent, take super mini, elevators, puffs, some makeup and here - we have a stylish and cool product that can also be charged a very nice premium.
Or as my second smartest friend says - "Do you know the difference between an omelet and an omelette? 40 shekels".
So in the case of the Hyaris Cross the base is the Hyaris, Toyota's super mini car, which here they added 23 cm in length, widened by 2 cm, added 9.5 cm in height and 111 liters to its trunk. The wheelbase? It remains the same The usual Liaris.

And since they're all packed in a very fashionable body, which ranges from cute toughness to a cartoon of an SUV, you also get a very pleasant and nice-looking business here.
Less in the anemic white color of the test cars and even less with the local plastic stripes on the doors.
But apparently the importer is familiar with the custom of Israeli children to knock the nearby car in the parking lot by opening a door that is too violent, a tradition that is usually transmitted with the rest of their parents' screwed-up kindergartens.
This is what I call getting to know the local market.

In the cabin the business goes down a few floors.
It's not the overall look that is actually interesting with its curves and color games, but more the simple materials, the slightly cheap atmosphere and the general feeling that someone was in a hurry to go home during the design days of the cabin.
Except for a few smart points like the storage niche under the multimedia screen and half the effort with the semi-digital dashboard (but in a very simple look), there is not the feeling of a cabin that leaves you feeling a product that is not the cheapest on offer and the area around the mechanical air conditioner controls To it.
Want to see how to do it differently?
Take a look at the Renault Capture, Opel Mocha or Kia Stonik and even the Ford Puma.
The two-part split roof cover is manually operated in a very inconvenient manner.
Half scrolls forward and half backwards.
Its scrolling is very cumbersome and a bit like the correct assumption of a tourniquet - requiring either luck or skill for it to succeed for the first time.

The problems in the back seat start already with the opening of the doors, which I insisted on continuing to push until I realized that this is their maximum opening angle and good luck with strapping a baby like that.
The opening itself is not very generous either.
Remember the growth in all dimensions except the wheelbase in relation to the Yaris?
So this is reflected in the space in the back seat which is much less generous than what the exterior size suggests.
At least the seat itself is comfortable.
The trunk itself has a high loading threshold, but it has no problem swallowing a lot of things, it has a floor that can be adjusted to two heights and its volume is really outstanding.
Only it comes at the expense of a spare wheel and lacks anchors or hooks.

The test car in the SKY finish level is the senior among the finish levels of the petrol engine.
The instrumentation includes controls for the gears behind the wheel, keyless entry and drive, mood lighting, driving modes, tinted windows, a panoramic roof, an 8-inch multimedia screen with compatibility with Apple and Android.
The list of safety systems is comprehensive, impressive and much longer: 8 airbags, automatic braking, pedestrian and night detection, two-wheeled detection, intersection traffic detection, lane departure correction, adaptive cruise control, traffic light detection, automatic control of lights and a reminder to prevent forgetting Children in the car.
And beyond those Yaris Cross was selected this week to excel in European crash tests.

The driving position is good, sitting here is relatively high so the view of the traffic around is excellent.
Slightly less thick front beams would have been welcome.
In the city of Yaris Cross maneuvers very nicely, creeping in and out of parking lots easily.
He swallows the slight disruptions, the manhole covers and the asphalt patch nicely, which is a lot thanks to the clever act of leaving it with 16-inch rims in the 65-section and not following the fashion of the large, low-cut rims.
Less happy here about large fragments on which he jumps.
Out of town the situation is improving, but there are other problems, we will get to that.
In terms of road behavior there was a surprise here.
On such a clumsy chassis, a tension beam in the back, what can one already expect.
Well Yaris Cross turned out to be quite a likable thing on a winding road.
This is not a GT86 okay?
But there are good responses of the body to turning the steering wheel, you can load it with turns without losing it, nice, totally nice guy.

The car that arrives in Israel in two propulsion configurations, petrol or hybrid, came to us for a test in the petrol version. It is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that produces 125 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 15.6 kg at 4,800 rpm. Its connection to the front wheels goes through a continuous gearbox with 10 "transmission ratios" that are supposed to simulate a natural feeling of transmission And
this arrangement is not good, really not good, wants to say far from good at a level where you can barely see the good shimmering somewhere on the horizon. Noise that makes you want to go out on the porch in your tank top and shout "Shut up!" The cabin has a lot of road noise.
But for one thing he totally played it safe - his fuel economy.
It stood at 15.1km per liter at the end of the test days and there was not much compassion these days. When it comes to engine utilization, in the power unit which is really one of Toyota's least successful - it does things that other manufacturers still do not approach.

Summary
The Yaris Cross and I started well.
I liked its design, the list of beautiful accessories, that of the safety systems is in my eyes a very big nose for an importer who does not count on safety at the expense of the price in the showroom.
But on the road the Yaris Cross just has a hard time impressing, the feeling is of a car not being meticulous in its materials, assembly and quality of the cabin.
Does not give a real advantage in space, comfort, refinement and all of these are doomed to move around with a very medium power unit.
That its excellent fuel consumption also makes it difficult to sweeten the pill.
If all of these would come with a nice market-breaking price tag, but Yaris Cross at this level of finish walks around with a sticker of 132,000 shekels.
Chetter Yaris Cross, except for the fact that Toyota's logo is all they need to pull out a credit card - it's hard to define you as a worthy deal.
