Trailer for the latest episode of "Dexter: New Blood" (Showtime)

Please note, the review includes spoilers for the latest episode of "Dexter: New Blood". Do not read if you do not want to be exposed before watching the details of the plot of the last episode.

During the ten episodes of "Dexter: New Blood," it was hard not to feel that the plot was progressing rapidly. In the original series Sergeant James Ducks' suspicions about Dexter came only in the second season. In the sequel, however, one of the big surprises came in the fifth episode, when Angel Batista wound up at a conference in New York and brought to Bishop's headquarters (Julia Jones) eye-opening information about Jim Lindsay, also known as Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall). ).

We had to understand even then the goal that the new series is aimed at.

Even before that.

"Dexter: New Blood" was created not only to eliminate the bad taste left by the end of the original series, which is considered one of the worst in the history of television, and came anyway after four seasons whose quality diminished as they progressed;

But to install a new ending to this saga.

Make a correction to one of the iconic figures of the 21st century, and in particular to the end of its path.

Clyde Phillips, who created the original series (based on the books of Jeff Lindsay, to whom Dexter's fake name is a tribute) and left after four seasons, once again took the reins in the sequel in an attempt to protest the injustice his heirs - and in particular Scott Buck, who trusted The last three seasons - for a character he brought to the screen and successfully navigated for four years.

Dexter came at a time when TV prestige series centered on characters who challenged the protagonist.

It started of course in 1999 with a series about a mobster ("The Sopranos"), continued with a corrupt cop ("The Defender"), came to a chemistry teacher who becomes a drug baron to support his family after his death ("Breaking Bad"), and so on and so forth.

If you were a white man carrying a huge psychological load and doing horrible deeds, even if the motives were proper, there was a place for you on luxury television.

In between, in 2006, Dexter arrived.

Although a serial killer, but one that has a code: he hunts down and only preys on other murderers who have escaped punishment.

This is a very exciting starting point but also not very brave, and this is exactly the definition of the original "Dexter" from beginning to end.

Even at its peak, under Phillips, she lacked real complexity or depth, suffered from countless holes, and her protagonist enjoyed masses of coincidences and fateful interventions that helped him escape from anyone who chased after him, whether criminals or cops, right up until that bitter end in 2013.

Dexter has seen so many deaths due to his actions or committed himself, including of the people closest to him, while he himself has evaded trial in every sense.

Nonetheless, as a thriller series "Dexter" was - again, in the first four seasons - one big and nerve-wracking fun, one that knows well how to build a plot, alertness and highs. This is exactly what "Dexter: New Blood" did, for better or worse, which made it one of the most enjoyable series of the last two and a half months. There was a lot of cleverness in the story that unites Dexter and his son, who like him is "born in blood" and like him therefore suffers from the same mental disability.

From the beginning, the presence of Harrison (Jack Alcott) forced Dexter to do a mental arithmetic, one that the series does with him, and for a change without just scratching the surface and without being deterred by the consequences. One of the elements that bothered viewers the most, the presence of the late bear (Jennifer Carpenter) as an angel on Dexter's shoulder, was part of this beating for sin. Dexter was surrounded by reminders of the destruction he had sown, and even that did not stop him from continuing. Max inlaid a few small bumps along the way.

All this time, however, the universe closed in on him.

On the face of it the last episode left unanswered questions, chief among them Batista's coming to meet with Bishop, but it was not really the man - although it might certainly have been nice to see a confrontation between him and his colleague who thought he was dead.

Batista's involvement at the end of the story has to do with Dexter's legacy and his probable identification as a butcher from Bey Harbor, even if not necessarily in public opinion and even if he escaped punishment in the very act of his death.

A complete and effective extension.

"Dexter: New Blood" (Photo: Screenshot, Showtime)

Throughout Dexter's life, most of the time the character at its center was not really portrayed as an anti-hero. For us viewers Dexter was a fighter for justice that is hard not to applaud. But this is what the last season in general and the last detail in particular mentioned: the human peripheral damage for which he is responsible is simply enormous. Officer Logan was the last and cruel piece in this puzzle. As further evidence of the wise construction of "New Blood," Logan was not only a cop but also a coach, a kind and good-natured man, someone that Harrison really liked. In this case it was very difficult to applaud Dexter for the daring escape.

The boy immediately grasped his father's hypocrisy, and then also made Dexter himself understand. In a series of quick and heartbreaking flashbacks, Dexter came to mind some of his innocent victims, ones who have nothing to do with code other than the "do not get caught" rule. But at what price not to get caught? And how long will it continue like this? Since Harrison's arrival he has served as a mirror figure for Dexter, one he has had to look at and see his distortion. Harrison presents the greatest sight of all to his father at the end of his journey, interpreting for him the reflection that emanates from it and that Dexter simply could not decipher. A monstrous character with a mind that has been corrupted and has long since lost its way. Just the kind of people Dexter himself takes their lives in the name of justice. And Harrison is doing it now, just as Dexter taught him.

Although the edges seem to be left open, this is a complete and effective sequel to Dexter Morgan's story.

Not only does she protest the memory of the previous and terrible ending, but she does kindness to the entire series by giving it - perhaps for the first time - real complexity and depth.

Dexter and Dexter finally looked straight at the truth and realized that the law is one and inevitable.

Small

This is not to say that this ended Dexter's life as a franchisee.

As in its early days, the sequel series also garnered excellent ratings on the Showtime cable network, which must have intensified with views of Wii and the parent company's streaming service, Paramount Plus.

But does the series have a right to exist without Dexter himself (as a living character, that is, not one who is in the background and carries advice to restrain)?

Instinct says no, but as usually happens, the answer that wins is probably the one that might yield the most profits.

All "Dexter: New Blood" episodes, including the finale, are available in Bite and Iodi.
