In France, a new law on car advertising will apply from March.

Strict guidelines then apply to the car manufacturers.

Paris - There are quite a few laws around the world that make you just want to shake your head.

Some of these also affect cars.

Motorists in Jasper Gates, Canada, are forbidden to drive faster than a horse or a carriage.

In Australia, on the other hand, it is better not to get caught with hay in the trunk - unless you are driving a taxi.

But the French are apparently also open to strange regulations, as a new law shows.

However, the new law in France does not affect motorists in our neighboring country, but advertising by car manufacturers.

From March 2022, they will have to comply with much more stringent requirements for their advertisements than before.

Because the law obliges car manufacturers to draw attention to alternative and environmentally friendly means of transport, as reported by 24auto.de.

The French government wants to support efforts to reduce pollution and emissions.

The car manufacturers can choose between three advertising messages:

  • "Consider carpooling."

  • "Take public transport for everyday use."

  • "Walk short distances or ride a bike."

The bicycle could soon be featured in French car advertisements.

In addition, advertising in print, TV, radio, on posters or on the Internet must contain the hashtag “#SeDeplacerMoinsPolluer” (move and pollute less).

A reference to the CO2 emission class is also mandatory from March 1st.

Anyone who violates this can be fined up to 50,000 euros.

France: Law could be tightened from 2028

As France24 reports, automakers like VW or Hyundai are ready to abide by the new French law.

The German carmaker also stated that it was working with its advertising agency to examine how the regulation could best be complied with.

However, according to the AFP agency, the law is only a first step.

From 2028, an advertising ban is to apply to vehicles that have CO2 emissions of more than 123 grams per kilometer.

Lobby groups had even called for a general ban on car advertising.
