In order to ensure more safety for motorists on the road, numerous new assistance systems will have to be built into new cars as standard from 2022.

There will be numerous innovations * for drivers in 2020.

The EU already passed a regulation in 2019, which will now officially come into effect in 2022.

It stipulates that from July 6, 2022, all new vehicle types in the basic equipment must have numerous new assistance systems - including, for example, an emergency lane departure warning system or a drowsiness warning.

From July 7, 2024, these assistance systems will then be mandatory for all new vehicles.

• Intelligent Speed ​​Assistance (ISA)

  : In the future, the assistance system will prevent drivers from exceeding the speed limit.

  It has digital road maps and uses traffic sign recognition to determine whether speed limits are being observed.

  If the limit is exceeded, the system draws attention to this with acoustic and visual warnings.

• Emergency brake assistant

  : From 2022, an emergency brake assistant is to become mandatory in new vehicle types.

  It should independently recognize dangerous situations and brake the vehicle to prevent collisions.

• Emergency

  Lane Keeping Assist: The Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) is already known to many, but from 2022 the Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELK: Emergency Lane Keeping) will become standard in vehicles.

  He intervenes even more aggressively if the vehicle threatens to leave the road or comes into oncoming traffic.

• Device for installing an alcohol immobilizer

  : As early as 2019, the EU countries decided that new vehicles must have a device for connecting an alcohol immobilizer from 2022.

  First of all, it should only be a standardized interface.

  If necessary, the alcohol immobilizer can then be installed.

• Drowsiness detection

  : In order to prevent microsleep at the wheel, drowsiness detection is supposed to analyze the driving behavior of the driver and indicate with acoustic and optical signals that breaks must be observed.

• Reversing

  assistant: When reversing, the assistant should warn of passers-by or other obstacles.

• Seat belt warning system

  : The warning system has been mandatory for the front and rear seats of new type-approved vehicles since September 1, 2019.

  From September 1, 2021, this regulation is to apply to all newly registered cars.

• Accident data memory (black box)

  : As with the “black box” in aircraft, cars should also have a data memory in the future that can be used to reconstruct the course of an accident.
