The rapper Smudo from the Fantastischen Vier defends the Luca app against allegations by three network politicians from the Greens and the FDP.

The artist told Bild on Tuesday that he did not understand their call to uninstall the app.

"I consider it irresponsible that a call by one or two politicians I don't know could lead to people deleting the Luca app in the middle of the pandemic situation."

Smudo has a financial stake in the operating company of the Luca app.

The Luca app is intended to help restaurant owners and event organizers to do the legally required recording of visitor contacts without a mess of paperwork.

The application has been criticized for months.

The last time it caught fire was an incident in Mainz.

There, the police, together with the health department, used data from the Luca app when looking for witnesses to a fatal fall in a restaurant.

Afterwards, the member of the state parliament and digital policy spokesman for the FDP, Daniel Karrais, as well as the member of the Greens and parliamentary group spokesman for media and network policy, Alexander Salomon, publicly called on citizens to delete the Luca app from their mobile phones.

Some IT experts had recommended this before.

Prosecutor apologizes

The actions of the authorities in Mainz had been criticized by the Luca makers themselves. According to the Infection Protection Act, no data may be retrieved from the system for the purpose of looking for witnesses or prosecuting, explained the operating company Culture4life. "The actions of the police and the health department were not covered by the Infection Protection Act, which the authorities have also admitted."

The SWR quoted a written statement from the public prosecutor's office: "The Mainz public prosecutor's office expresses its regret towards those affected by inadmissible access to the data and asks that this access be excused." It is ensured that the relevant data is no longer used . In addition, an examination was initiated to determine whether Luca data had also been used in other investigations, but no other case is known to date.

Smudo now told »Bild« that the Luca app is currently effectively helping to break chains of infection every day. The 13 federal states that have Luca licenses are currently examining the extent to which this description is correct. In response to SPIEGEL inquiries in the first week of January, all 13 responsible ministries replied that they had not yet decided whether they would like to continue using the Luca system. The current licenses are valid until the end of March and April, respectively. Smudo told the “Bild”: “If a federal state decides against it, that does not justify a Germany-wide appeal. It is simply irresponsible. Anyone hanging on the steep slope doesn't throw away a rope. "

Smudo vigorously denied speculation about plans to sell the Luca app.

“I usually leave such rumors uncommented.

But here I would like to say: We want to adapt Luca personally to the challenges of the pandemic.

In the last few weeks alone, we have made two updates with ›2G-plus‹ and Luca Connect, which bring health authorities and operators a lot further.

We want to continue on this path of innovation. "
