This is an extremely large drug seizure in intramural Paris.

A man in his forties was surprised by customs officers overnight from Saturday to Sunday at Gare de Lyon (12th century) with 58 kg of cocaine.

Such a quantity of drugs is worth more than three million euros at the retail price on the street.

“The customs officers arrested this man as he was about to take the train.

They checked him and searched his luggage before discovering this large quantity of narcotics, hidden in a large suitcase,” said a source close to the case.

The suspect was placed in customs detention before being transferred and placed in police custody in the premises of the narcotics brigade of the Paris judicial police responsible for the continuation of the investigations.

For the time being, he says he is terrified by those who would have asked him to transport this drug.

But no information has transpired on the sponsors or the recipients of the cocaine.

The forties can remain in the hands of the police for up to ninety-six hours before being presented to the Paris prosecutor's office, which will probably decide to open a judicial investigation in order to dismantle this traffic.

Stations are crossing points for traffickers

The international stations of the capital are obviously places of passage for drug traffickers.

They are also constantly subject to police and customs surveillance.

But such a seizure is very rare even if cocaine traffickers are regularly arrested there.

The police officers of the railway network brigade are more accustomed to flushing out Guyanese mules coming from Orly.

During the last six months, the various arrests have made it possible to get their hands on 13 kg.

The last major seizure at a Paris station dates back to April 2014. At the time, at the Gare du Nord (X), customs officers had stopped three men, aged 31 and 33, while they were transporting 56.2 kg of cocaine in a suitcase.

The trio wanted to join the Netherlands.
