Hot pizzas will soon be delivered by robotic cars in the USA.

One of these driverless vehicles is now ready for series production.

Los Angeles – Nuro, a Californian start-up partnering with automaker BYD, has unveiled the production version of a self-driving delivery vehicle.

The Americans want to start pre-series production in Nevada as soon as possible.

A supplier network for large-scale production is also being set up together with the Chinese partner BYD.

For the USA alone, Nuro plans to produce tens of thousands of its delivery vans, as reported by 24auto.de.

The windowless and electrically powered mini-mobile is said to be 20 percent smaller than a normal car.

The transport space, accessible via two large flaps, offers a storage volume of 765 litres.

The two spatially separate boxes should be heatable or coolable.

Depending on the purpose of the delivery, there are different types of modules for dividing the freight compartments.

Up to 24 filled shopping bags with a weight of up to 230 kilograms can be accommodated.

Thanks to an arsenal of cameras and sensors, the electrically powered mini-mobile Nuro R3 should be able to drive autonomously.

The series Nuro is battery-electric, the top speed is limited to 45 miles per hour, which corresponds to just over 70 km/h. The delivery van is to move autonomously through traffic, which is why the van has an arsenal of cameras as well as radar and lidar sensors with a self-cleaning function that provide the on-board computer with a 360-degree image of its surroundings. Basically, the Nuro R3 is conditioned to a defensive driving strategy, but as a novelty for the third generation there is an external airbag in the front, which offers additional protection should a crash be unavoidable. Delivery services are showing great interest in the Nuro so that they can deliver to customers with a driverless vehicle in the future.

Nuro's partners include Walmart, Fedex and the pizza delivery service Domino's.
