The front of the Mazda2 Hybrid looks robust and distinctive.
Pretty much like a Toyota Yaris.

The new Mazda2 is now available twice.
As a regular small car and as a hybrid.
In this variant, it not only looks different, it doesn't even come from Mazda.
In the small car segment, too, the focus is increasingly on pollutants.
That's why Mazda now offers a car that has the power of two hearts.
Nothing is impossible: we reveal who the Mazda partners are.
What do Mazda and Goethe have in common?
The German poet prince has the witch declaim in Faust: “You must understand!
Make ten out of one, and let go of two, and make three straight away, That's how rich you are!” Japanese car manufacturers are now also trying their hand at poetry.
Her contribution to the famous witches' 1-1-1 is: "Make two out of two, and make two straight away!" Because the new
Mazda2 city runabout
is now available in two models, but they look very different.
The conventional
Mazda2
with the Kodo design that has become famous and the
Mazda2 Hybrid
, which not only looks suspiciously like a Toyota Yaris, but actually is one - forget the exchanged brand logos and type designations.

The original from Toyota looks the same except for brand logos and type designation.
The Yaris Hybrid costs from around 21,000 euros.

The Mazda2 Hybrid even runs off the same line
Label fraud at Mazda?
no way.
Such deals are not unusual in the auto industry because both partners benefit from them:
Toyota
, because they earn money with it and don't even have to rebuild a plant, but even let the rebranded Mazda run off the same assembly line in France.
And Mazda, because they use it to buy technology that helps them meet the ever-stricter CO2 fleet requirements.
And since Europe is an extremely important market for Mazda, there was plenty of room for action here.
Developing your own hybrid platform would have taken too long and would have been too expensive.
And that's the regular Mazda2, which is now available as a facelift with optimized engines that consume less.

115 hp and two engines - that promises agility
So there are now two Mazda2.
Both roll to the dealers in the spring.
Let's stay with the full
hybrid variant
for now .
It is powered by a
three-cylinder turbo petrol engine with 93 hp
.
It also has
two more electric motors
.
One acts directly on the front axle with its 80 hp, another unit acts as a generator that is driven by the engine in order to keep the charge level of the high-voltage battery constant.
When driving, you shouldn't notice much of it.
Except that the Mazda-Toyota starts silently (zoom zoom...) and in electric mode.
This saves fuel, CO2 and nitrogen oxides.
In normal operation, the aggregates work hand in hand - the
consumption
should be at a low four liters.
This is what the Mazda2 Hybrid looks like from the inside.
The screen in the middle should be larger than the conventional model.

Mazda2 Hybrid - small kissable ball instead of a cat
The
Mazda2 Hybrid
not only doesn't look like a Mazda2 - the vehicle dimensions are also slightly different in this Japanese-Japanese co-production.
It is 13 centimeters shorter and 1.5 centimeters flatter.
In return, it's slightly wider - by six centimeters - and is closer in shape to a kissable ball, while the regular Mazda2 has the slightly elongated shape of a cat.
When sitting, you shouldn't notice the difference too much, because the wheelbase is only missing by one centimeter.
Mazda's original Kodo design wants to be simple and puristic.
Looks good in the interior of the normal Mazda2.

And what's new on the regular Mazda2?
This
facelift
deserves its name.
Only a very tender hand was put on here.
The main improvements are in the engines.
They are all revised petrol engines, now available in three performance levels.
With
75 hp and a 6-speed manual switch
in the base.
Here the Japanese also offer a
mild hybrid variant
with an electric and 22.5 volt starter generator and
90 hp
, optionally switched manually but also as an automatic.
The top engine is called the e-Skyactic G 115 M Hybrid
, which is somewhat awkward
.
Means translated:
mild hybrid with 115 hp and manual switch
.
According to Mazda, the optimization of the combustion technology has reduced fuel consumption and emissions by almost eleven percent.
They are around 5.0 liters and between 100 and 113 g for CO2.
Prices start at 14,540 euros, the most powerful Mazda2 starts at 22,810 euros.
Crisp cut with thick buttocks - this is how the Mazda2 Hybrid presents itself at the rear.

Our conclusion on the double lottery from Japan
Make two out of two - this formula is likely to confuse Mazda customers quite a bit.
The question also arises as to why one should then buy the copy and not the original.
So Toyota Yaris instead of Mazda2 Hybrid.
But that should not concern us.
For sure is.
The Mazda2 Hybrid is a mature car that is up to date.
The
low consumption
and the good environmental conscience should convince the buyer.
Slightly more stylish, but still quite powerful for a small car - this is what the regular Mazda2 looks like at the rear.
