A huge breakthrough is emerging in the field of nuclear energy: an experiment in generating electricity at an experimental nuclear power plant in Oxfordshire in the UK has succeeded in producing more than twice the peak power generation at a nuclear power plant to date.
The breakthrough came after more than two decades of experimenting and perfecting systems at the Fulham Center for Fusion Energy and scientists have called the experiment a "significant milestone" on the road to turning nuclear energy produced by fusion into clean, cheap and readily available energy.
"These unprecedented results are a huge step forward in conquering one of the greatest scientific and engineering challenges facing humanity," Professor Ian Chapman, head of the UK's Nuclear Energy Organization, told the Guardian.
"Obviously we need to take significant steps in the field of energy to deal with climate change, and fusion energy has such great potential," the scientist explained.
The scientists managed to reach a production of 59 mega-joules in two minutes, an amount equal to the energy emitted from a 14-kilogram explosion of TNT, more than double the amount of energy they were able to produce from a melting pot in the past.
The reactor used by the Navion power station is shaped like a bagel and contains plasma, or ionized gases, which reach a temperature of 150 million degrees Celsius, a temperature ten times warmer than the center of the sun.
Nuclear fusion can be a tremendous source of cheap and clean electricity, and help reward humanity from using polluting energy sources like fossil fuels.
These types of fuels cause a lot of pollution and accelerate global warming.
At the World Climate Conference, it was agreed to reduce the use of coal and inefficient subsidies for coal and fossil fuels.
Clean electricity generation can lead to the desired reduction and will bring about a real revolution in many areas.
