The purchase premium for electric cars could be eliminated by the middle of the decade.

Ferdinand Dudenhöffer has a clear idea of what to do next.

Duisburg – More and more people in Germany are opting for an electric car.

And the manufacturers have long since decided to turn their backs on the combustion engine.

But it is also true that many customers choose an electric car because of the high purchase premium of up to 9,000 euros.

This was initially extended by the traffic light government until the end of 2022.

After that, it is to be gradually reduced and could be history by the middle of the decade.

The purchase bonus for e-cars is more popular than ever.

If the automotive expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer (68), known as the “Autopope”, has his way, there should also be an incentive to buy afterwards.

However, this should be different than the environmental bonus, as reported by 24auto.de.

The car expert also gives a forecast on the subject of a lack of chips.

As the “Spiegel” reports, the director of the CAR Center Automotive Research is instead calling for an increase in VAT for petrol and diesel cars from 19 to 26 percent.

According to Dudenhöffer, the additional tax would average EUR 2,500 per car with a petrol or diesel engine.

This could at least partially compensate for the elimination of the purchase premium for electric cars, which causes an “increased investment risk” for car manufacturers and charging network operators.

In addition, the Stromer are becoming cheaper anyway due to advances in battery technology and the end of combustion engines from some manufacturers.

In addition, cars with diesel or petrol engines are likely to increase in price due to the CO2 tax.

Higher VAT for combustion engines

The increase in VAT on petrol and diesel cars would also have the advantage that it would only apply to the purchase of new combustion engines.

Anyone who already drives a diesel or petrol engine would remain unaffected by the VAT increase.

Such approaches already exist in other countries. Since 2018, buyers of cars with internal combustion engines in Sweden have been paying an increased annual vehicle tax for the first three years.

However, such a measure is not planned in Germany, as the coalition agreement of the new federal government shows.
