What can the new BMW M2 do?

The rumor mill is churning - we reveal what the M240i is already revealing about its big brother.

  • With the last generation of the M2, BMW has made a big splash.

  • The fan community speculates whether the new engine is up to 490 hp.

  • Even more importantly, does the

    M2

get the grill with the thick kidneys?

What can the new BMW M2 do?

The rumor mill is churning

Fascination M. The

“most powerful letter in the world” for

BMW* keeps car enthusiasts in high spirits.

The most hotly debated topic at the moment is the new M2: How can you make a fascinatingly good car even better?

The old M2 shone with features that even inspire passionate Porsche drivers.

Six-speed manual transmission, six-cylinder biturbo with 370 to 410 hp (Competition), 465 to 550 Nm of torque and 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds out.

The M2 had to go two years earlier than planned because it could no longer meet the stricter emission standards.

This sunset is symbolic.

The M 2 has not been produced for the European market since the end of 2020.

In some disciplines, the M240i tops the old M2

Enough time and space for speculation about the successor.

New food is now being served up from the rumor mill because the new 2 Series coupe that BMW unveiled in mid-2021 is now rolling to dealerships.

Also included is the new

M240i

,

which reveals a lot about what the top model M2 could look like and how powerful the engine could be

.

In any case, the M240i not only comes very close to the old M2, it even tops it in some disciplines.

We compare the two models and say what can be deduced from this for the brand new M2, which will probably not be available until early next year.

One thing is certain: the BMW M2 will be longer, wider and flatter

When it comes to vehicle dimensions, the new

M2

will gain a lot.

After all, it is built on the same platform as the regular 2 Series, which in turn uses the BMW 3 and 4 Series platform.

In figures this means that the

2 Series Coupé

is 10.5 centimeters longer, 5 centimeters wider and 2.5 centimeters flatter.

That alone gets the

M240i

an extremely sporty appearance.

Then there are the track widths, which have grown considerably.

It's a good 50 millimeters at the front and around 30 at the back. You can and must assume that the real M versions will add a few millimeters, especially on the rear axle.

The M2 is supposed to stand out on the road, the competition version maybe even on 20-inch wheels, speculate the insiders from

motorsport-total.com

.

With the M240i, the exhaust tailpipes are hidden behind trapezoidal panels, with the new M2 there are four pipes.

Four core exhaust pipes instead of trapezoidal screens

The

sporty appearance of the M240i

is orchestrated by two typical M features.

The massive power domes on the hood and the M mirrors.

Here, too, the 240 drives pretty close to the M model.

Nevertheless, there are also a few differences at the front: The air intakes are triangular - in the M model they are probably square.

And apparently the turgid radiator grille with the monstrous kidneys, which divides the BMW fan community so deeply, is also off the table.

A square radiator grille is indicated in

the

Erlkönig photos , but with horizontal slats, as the usually well-informed

bmw-blog.com

reports.

The M2

has a clear distinguishing feature

up at the stern.

On the M240i, the exhaust ends in two trapezoidal, chrome-plated panels.

They will definitely be replaced on the M2.

Four thick, round tailpipes can be seen on the Erklkönig shots, with the even sharper version, the M2 Competition, they have an even larger cross-section.

Double struts in the grille and the M 2 logo.

This is what the grille of the old M2 looks like, which has been history since late 2020.

BMW: Will the M2 CS be as powerful as the M3 and M4?

The motorization of the M2

is relatively clear

.

It gets the petrol engine that also provides the power in the M3 and M4.

A double-charged in-line six-cylinder under the type designation S58.

Although it descends from the B58, the components are only ten percent the same.

This makes it very different from the M240i, which has the B58 under the hood.

The brings it here to at least 374 hp and a torque of 500 Newton meters, which is 4 hp and 35 Nm of torque more than the old M2.

For this reason alone, Department M will go a step further with the successor.

It should be at least 410 hp.

If the previous distances between the individual model series were continued, the Competition could go in the direction of 450 hp, and with the top model M2 CS even up to 490 hp.

This would put you between the two M3 and M4 variants.

There, the six-cylinder delivers 480 hp in the “normal” version, while the Competition has 510 hp.

The torque of 550 Nm would then be on par with the predecessor.

Hand switch and rear-wheel drive remain with the M2

That's no longer a secret: there is a clear difference between the M240i and the future M2 in terms of

drive

.

The conventional two drives with eight-speed automatic, the power is brought to the road with the flexible all-wheel drive system from BMW, the x-Drive.

Typical for the Bavarians, the rear is clearly emphasized.

The handling should be pretty perfect with a weight distribution of 50:50 and a standard sport differential.

The Launch Control goes from 0 to 100 in 4.3 seconds. Even if all-wheel drive were possible, the M2 will probably have pure rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual switch.

Apart from small things and digital features, the interior of the new 2 Series Coupé should also look like this in the M2.

From 0 to 100 km/h in less than four seconds - it would be possible

It can be assumed with a probability bordering on certainty that there will be one or two additional technical delicacies

with the

M2 chassis .

Borrowings from the big brother M3 would also be possible here.

How fast the new M2 will accelerate has not yet been revealed.

The only question is whether there is already a 3 in front of the decimal point in the normal variant.

But probably not.

However, the performance models from the M2 should break this sound barrier.

Of course, there is still no final clarity in terms of price.

The M240i only serves as a template here to a limited extent.

The base starts at 56,000 euros.

The new M2 should be significantly higher, at just under 70,000 euros.
