Is the breakthrough for hydrogen in cars yet to come?

Yamaha modified a V8 engine for a car manufacturer accordingly.

Hamamatsu (Japan) – The end of petrol and diesel engines seems in sight – if many manufacturers are to be believed, then the automotive future is purely electric.

Nissan has just announced that it is phasing out combustion engine development – with one small exception.

At least according to the current status, the fuel cell seems to have little chance in conventional cars - possibly more in heavy trucks.

But could another technology make hydrogen popular in cars?

Yamaha has now developed a hydrogen V8 on behalf of a Japanese car manufacturer, as reported by 24auto.de.

The hydrogen V8 was commissioned by Toyota.

The unit developed by Yamaha is based on the 5.0-liter engine from the luxury sports coupe Lexus RC F. In order to be able to operate the engine with hydrogen, the injection nozzles, the cylinder heads and the intake manifold were modified, among other things.

The engine has an output of 450 hp and a maximum torque of 540 Nm.

On behalf of Toyota, Yamaha converted a 5.0-liter V8 to run on hydrogen.

Yamaha develops hydrogen V8 - not the first project of this kind

Of course, the Japanese idea is not entirely new: Deutz AG has announced series production of a six-cylinder hydrogen engine for 2024.

And Punch Hydrocells also has a V8 hydrogen engine in development based on a 6.6 liter V8 diesel engine.

The fact that Toyota is also looking for alternatives to e-mobility is not entirely new: in November, the carmaker teamed up with Kawasaki, Subaru, Mazda and Yamaha to jointly research CO2-neutral engines.

"We are working towards becoming carbon neutral by 2050," said Yamaha Motor President Yoshihiro Hidaka.

"At the same time, 'motor' is in our company name and we accordingly have a great passion and commitment to the combustion engine."
