Trailer for the second season of "Euphoria" (HBO)

A week before the end of its second season, "Euphoria" can already be announced as one of HBO's biggest hits.

The tumultuous youth drama that returned to the screens after more than two years of absence following the Corona, has recorded fantastic data for the esteemed American network.

Among other things, a jump of almost twice the number of views in the first episode of the season compared to the premiere episode (about 13 million viewers).

The second episode of the season became the second most watched in the history of the series, only because the third episode took first place.

The fourth episode jumped 166% compared to its first season counterpart, and so on.

Like many series that benefited from the Corona retreat, "Euphoria" gained many new viewers who joined it during the break between seasons, and of course made the various Reddit forums and social networks a source of endless discussions about every detail and character throughout the season.

This success naturally led to the renewal of the series for a third season, as well as expectations that its big star, Zendaya, would be a strong candidate to win a second Emmy for Best Drama Actress.

But beneath the hype and the good news in the commercial sector, many rumors of bad blood behind the scenes of "Euphoria" have accompanied the last few weeks.

A Daily Beast investigation sheds light on some of the salient issues that have preoccupied fans of the series.

Eternal neon in a murky head: "Detachment" is an impressive and sometimes shaky series

The first and most talked about deals with the rift created between the creator of the series, Sam Levinson, and one of the stars of the first season, Barbie Pereira - who plays Kat.

In the first season, Kat gained a significant plot line, which dealt with a positive body image and the discovery of the sexuality hidden in her by becoming a star of webcams for adults.

But the new season presents a completely opposite version of the character, which gets a very short screen time and a narcissistic and puzzling plot line, to say the least.

According to various sources in the production, Pereira abandoned the series set twice throughout the filming of the season, due to disagreements with Levinson as to the direction in which he took her character.

The significant cut in her presence indicates that the hard feelings were mutual.

In two recent interviews, Pereira maintained ambiguity about behind-the-scenes friction, explaining the direction her character's story took by saying "everyone is losing their sanity this season."

But further investigation suggests that the incident between Pereira and Levinson is part of a problematic whole of the production process.

Sources who spoke with the magazine said that the filming days were extended to 15 and even 17 hours.

All this because Levinson came to the set without an orderly filming script as usual, and instead asked to improvise while on the move - a choice that complicated the placement of the cameras and significantly prolonged the production.

In general, Levinson's tendencies to choose complex artistic representations to tell the story of his characters, also appear to be a factor that has hindered and complicated the filming of the season.

The filming of the season opening episode, which revolves around the New Year's party, has been extended to more than a week.

Maude Apteau, the daughter of Judd Apteau who plays Lexi in the series, said that if the long days were not enough, then the actual filming was done at night.

"We would start filming at six in the evening and continue until when the sun rises, and we were so tired. We tried to stay awake with all our might."

Jacob Alordi, who plays Nate Jacobs in the series, reinforces Apatow's testimony.

"The thing is we've been doing this for such a long time. This party was filmed for over a week, so very quickly it became something that feels like hell. Like a party you do not want to be in. And you can not wait to leave already."

Another character who has almost completely disappeared from the second season is Chris McKay (played by Algae Smith), the football star who had a relationship with Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) in the first season, and apart from a brief appearance in the first episode, is completely erased from it.

McKay claims he is curious himself about the direction his character has been taken.

Zendaya, who also serves as the actual producer of the series, claims that the extensive changes are a result of the long break between seasons.

According to her, the long period of time made Levinson want to significantly change the direction in which the series would go.

And perhaps the explanation lies in Levinson's preference for some of his stars over others.

In addition to Zendaya and Hunter Schaefer (who plays Jules), Sweeney herself is also considered a very favorite actress by Levinson.

The series is one of the salient reasons for her becoming one of the rising forces in Hollywood, and the new season shows a significant increase in screen time and the importance of her character to the plot.

In interviews, Sweeney said that she feels comfortable expressing her opinion about different plot lines, and in many cases she is even accepted and integrated in the various scripts.

She also testified that the close relationship allowed her to ask Levinson to cut scenes in which she was supposed to appear on screen naked.

At least on the face of it, the attempt to provoke drama in a series that is all about drama seems to serve all sides: it creates a topic for lively conversation between fans, leaves the series in the headlines and probably also contributes to the traffic of the various entertainment sites.

The questions that are likely to remain in the air until next season are how much these processes will change Euphoria in the future, and whether these changes will improve with the series or lead to uneven episodes and bizarre plot choices, as we have already experienced this season.
