Energy transition in Germany: are we threatened with power outages?

2022-02-22T19:04:25.475Z

The German power grid is currently being rebuilt. Green energy will soon cover most of our consumption. Can our network handle it?

The energy transition is coming: Green electricity, for example from wind power or solar systems, will soon cover the majority of our energy consumption.

According to the coalition agreement, Germany wants to obtain 80 percent of its electricity from renewable energies by 2030 - quite ambitious when you consider that only around 40 percent of this is currently fed into the power grid.

In the next eight years, the federal government wants to double the energy generated from renewable electricity.

With all of this, you have to keep in mind: Our current power grid is not the newest.

It was built for fossil energies such as coal and gas, i.e. energy sources that are predictable and reliable - the power plant is on and the electricity is flowing.

Due to the switch to sustainable energy sources, however, instead of fewer large power plants, there are many smaller energy sources that sometimes supply more, sometimes less electricity.

This poses a problem: the sun and wind cannot always generate the energy when it is needed.

Means: If it is dark and there is no wind at the same time, the electricity could fail.

The assumption is that a blackout is imminent.

The scenario of a widespread power blackout is tricky, especially in view of a digital future in which we want to electrify large parts, such as our transport.

A secure power grid is not only indispensable for the traffic turnaround.

But how serious is this threat really?

In this episode of "Climate Report", our podcast on the climate crisis, we deal with our power grid.

And with the question: What will our energy supply look like in the future?

And is a secure and reliable power supply still guaranteed even after the energy transition?

This time our guests are: Dirk Sattur, the technical director of the Mitteldeutsche Netzgesellschaft Strom.
