Last year, the number of people who died in traffic accidents in Germany fell again - to the previous low of 2569. This is based on preliminary data published by the Federal Statistical Office.

Since records began more than 60 years ago, fewer people have died in road accidents.

Compared to the previous year, the value has fallen by six percent.

Similar to 2020, however, the corona pandemic had an impact on the number of road deaths - traffic volume was again well below the level before the pandemic.

As early as December, the Federal Office had declared in a forecast in December that it looked like a new low.

According to the information, the decrease since 2019 is 16 percent.

At that time, 3046 fatalities were recorded.

More accidents but fewer injuries

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the number of people injured also fell in 2021: to around 321,000 people or by two percent compared to the previous year.

On the other hand, there was an increase in the number of accidents: the police recorded around 2.3 million accidents, three percent more than in 2020. However, 2.1 million of them only resulted in property damage.

The number of accidents in which people were injured or killed fell by two percent to around 258,000.

Disaggregated results for the past year are available for the period January to November.

Accordingly, fewer people were killed in almost all types of traffic.

The statistics authority reported the largest percentage drop for cyclists who ride without an auxiliary motor: the number of cyclists killed fell by 18 percent.

For the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC), however, these figures were no reason to give the all-clear, the decline was mainly a pandemic effect: "There was no significant improvement in road safety for cyclists in 2021," said Federal Managing Director Ann-Kathrin Schneider.

In freight transport the trend is reversed

The value for pedestrians and pedestrians has decreased by 14 percent.

The number of pedelec riders killed also fell by nine percent compared to the previous year.

For car occupants in passenger transport, the statistics show six percent fewer fatalities in the first eleven months of 2021.

On the other hand, there was an increase in freight transport: the number of occupants of goods vehicles such as trucks and semitrailer tractors killed rose by 18 percent.

The number of traffic fatalities has been falling since the 1970s.

The reason for this is above all ever better safety systems in vehicles.

Traffic death statistics have been collected since 1953.
