What do people want from the “car of the future”?

A representative survey has now devoted itself to this topic – with interesting results.

Berlin – Not only trade fairs give a glimpse into the technical future, but often also television series.

And what once seemed almost utopian, for example with “Knight Rider” in the 1980s, is now standard in almost every new car – screens, for example, and a computer voice that speaks to the driver.

Sometimes, however, it takes longer than predicted for technologies to gain acceptance.

And so the fully autonomous robotaxi still seems relatively far away today - probably mainly because the reality is then more complex than assumed.

But what do customers actually want from the “car of the future”?

A survey has now been devoted to this topic, as reported by 24auto.de.

Survey: How big is the Germans' desire for hydrogen propulsion

For the representative survey of the vehicle portal mobile.de, 2,064 people were interviewed, 1,755 of them with a driver's license.

Among other things, the result was that most Germans (38.4 percent) want to buy and own their vehicle directly in the future.

Financing is an option for 12.5 percent, a car subscription, as offered by more and more companies (e.g. Volvo), is only an option for 8.6 percent of those surveyed.

"Car of the future": Large displays more important than autonomous driving

As far as the technical properties of the “car of the future” are concerned, the topic of autonomous driving, which is being pushed by many manufacturers at full speed, is not so important for many customers: just 17.2 percent of those surveyed can imagine being chauffeured completely under computer control.

Significantly more important to drivers are large displays and digital displays, which almost every third person (30.6 percent) would like to see.

A large panorama roof for a better view is not necessarily high-tech, but is obviously still important for almost every fifth person.

"Car of the future": Desire for more environmental friendliness

Above all, the Germans attach great importance to the fact that the cars of the future emit fewer exhaust gases (55.9 percent) and are involved in fewer traffic accidents (54.1 percent).

A more environmentally friendly production and use of materials is also relevant for many of those surveyed (50.7 percent).

Surprising: Almost a third of Germans favor hydrogen (32.0 percent) as the drive type of the future.

In contrast, only 14.8 percent of those surveyed see electric vehicles, which many manufacturers are currently relying on, as future technology.

This is followed by petrol (13.9 percent), hybrid (11.5 percent) and diesel (5.8 percent).

According to the survey, gas (CNG/LPG) seems to have no chance: only 1.8 percent of those surveyed were in favor of it.
