The war in Ukraine is causing fuel prices to continue to rise sharply.

Petrol and diesel have climbed by more than 5 cents per liter in recent days.

But not everywhere.

The

Russian invasion of Ukraine

and the subsequent sanctions imposed by Western states are also having an impact on German motorists* - and increasingly so.

The ADAC reports that fuel prices have risen by more than 5 cents per liter in the past three days.

According to the report, drivers in Germany had to

pay an average of 1.811 euros per liter of Super E10

on Sunday (February 27), while the federal budget for diesel was 1.729 euros.

This means that fuel prices have risen by around 15 percent since Christmas - and because of the ongoing dramatic situation in the Ukraine crisis* there is no end in sight.

Even more price increases are likely.

Oil prices are also skyrocketing: as of February 28, the price of a barrel of crude oil was just over 100 US dollars, according to the ADAC.

That's four dollars more than last week.

No wonder:

Germany imports a little more than 34 percent of its crude oil from Russia.

According to expert opinion, the high fuel prices are currently due to the market situation, which has been complicated for a long time, and the EU sanctions have not yet had a direct effect.

But that is yet to come, for example Russia's SWIFT exclusion will make payment transactions more difficult and restrict trade.

It is also possible that

Russia itself will take measures to

restrict the availability of petrol, diesel and oil in Germany as a reaction to the tough sanctions.

It is therefore to be expected that the end of the price increase has not yet come.

In the wake of the high fuel prices, the coalition committee decided to retroactively increase the commuter allowance

to 38 cents as of January 1, 2022.

It applies from the 21st kilometer.

This was originally planned for 2024.

Nevertheless, there is criticism;

ADAC Transport President Gerhard Hillebrand announced that it would have been better to relieve commuters from the first kilometer.

You can currently refuel cheaper at various petrol stations abroad.

Example

Poland: Here the VAT rate on fuel was reduced to eight percent

, which led to a price reduction of around 15 cents per liter.

According to the ADAC, refueling is currently cheaper in Austria, the Czech Republic and Luxembourg than in Germany.

However, if you want to fill up replacement canisters, you should observe the legal upper limits – otherwise you could face fines.

Refuel cheaply in Germany: important tips

If you want to fill up in Germany, you should keep these two factors in mind to save money:

  • Time:

The petrol station statistics show that, especially in the late evening hours, cheaper fuel prices lure than during the rest of the day.

    The ADAC shows that

    between 4:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

lower fuel prices are announced at the gas stations.

    A low point is therefore reached in the periods between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and between 9:30 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.

  • Gas station location

    :

You generally pay a little more for petrol and diesel at motorway gas stations.

A liter usually costs more than 20 cents more here

than at other gas stations, reports the ADAC.

Finally, it is advisable

to keep

an eye on current fuel prices and to compare different gas station prices in order to find the cheapest possible offer.
