Batman's Batmobile has gone through countless incarnations over the years. From an open car to an armored vehicle with super performance - the ones that stand out in them

Faint from the bat!

Batman's cars

Wait, so he's both a superhero and he also has cool cars?

Anyone need another reason to understand why Batman is the guy to sit down with for a beer?

Even though he had a few smokers on the way

Yes, so for the past two years this bat has really not exactly been the favorite animal in the world, but hey, it's not that kids have rocked their parents before and wanted to adopt one.

And yet, as far as superheroes are concerned - Batman is totally the character who has made these animals the best PR in the world since Dracula.

So it's true that every superhero has his own stick, Spider-Man's webs, Thor's hammer, Captain America's shield, the green giant's clothes that are torn in just the right places when he swells and Super Man who has the absolute superpower - can't believe it?

Wear red panties on your tights and get back to me.

But when it comes to Batman, these are always the gadgets, and if the gadgets - then the Batmobile is absolutely the perfect toy for the superhero.

Almost from its inception, the Batmobile was Batman's main means of transportation.

Mostly because the public transport in Gotham was right on the face of it.

Just, because being both a superhero and having a cool car, it's pretty much the highlight.

But the Batmobile did not start at all like what we see here, the car itself that Batman drove was Bruce Wayne's private car, the first appearance of the nickname itself was in a comic book in 1941, but it was not the Batmobile we know today, but a red car that Batman drove and introduced A small bat emblem on the hood.

During the 1940s and 1950s, a number of cars appeared in comics that gradually became the general idea it has carried ever since - a dedicated and unique vehicle built to serve as Batman's main vehicle for the war on crime and all that that implies in terms of its features.

The Lincoln Futura on which the Batmobile was built was bought for a dollar (Photo: Manufacturer's website)

The first time the Batmobile penetrated popular culture was only in 1966 in the TV series "Batman".

It was preceded by another car called Batmobil in 1963, but it was not used by Batman, but was a kind of marketing accessory for promotion and was rented by DC Comics for commercials, etc.

But in 1966 the first Batmobile entered the small screen.

And the role of build it is given to George Barris, an American designer and builder of cars whose company has already bought itself a name in Hollywood for the task of building the Batmobile for the TV series.

The schedules were very tight, filming was about to begin and there was no time to plan and build a car from scratch.

He hires Bill Kushendri, another legendary car builder and they use as a base a Lincoln Futura, a 1955 concept car that Barris was passionate about and bought for himself (for a token sum of one dollar, it is said).

Within a record time of about two weeks the car was ready.

In 1966 it was the peak of sophistication (Photo: AP)

The list of gadgets included an iron cable cutter in the bow, a Bat Ray beam that struck a vehicle, a locator that would localize on signals, the Batscope which is a very explosive name for TV, a tire inflating mechanism, the Batcomputer radio that would communicate with the Batcomputer in his cave, The Batphone, the Bat Smoke the Bat turn that allowed the car to rotate 180 degrees instead of using parachutes (I know, very stupid) - in short full of things with the name Bat in them.

But there was something else in it that would appear in almost every Batmobile from now on - a rear burner.

Impressive and iconic as it was, the actual car itself was an ongoing mechanical nightmare.

Concept cars are not really supposed to travel, certainly not ten years after they were introduced and certainly not after they are modified and used intensively for photography.

The engine was warming up, its dedicated tires exploded from time to time and during filming the original engine was replaced with that of a Ford Galaxy.

In 2013, Barris sold the original Batmobile (there were 5 in total) through the "Bart Jackson" auction house for $ 4.2 million.

Not a bad investment at all.

The next stop was in 1989, with Tim Burton's Batman movie.

Then the Batmobile, which is considered to be most identified with Batman, is shown, she appeared in it and in "Batman Returns" in 1992.

She is the Batmobile mainly because of her design that captured the wild-dark spirit of Gotham who imagined, created and presented Tim Burton.

But no less, it did not look like anything else - from the huge rear burner, the fins winged fins, the cabin canopy moving forward (it was a constraint, because they forgot to put doors in the model), the huge muzzle that contained the jet engine to the huge front wings that compare She really has the appearance of a living creature.

Although the base was, well, much less animalistic - Chevrolet Impala and Oldmobile Cutles, because two cars were built for the film.

And they were huge - really huge.

6.6 meters in length, 2.4 meters in width - it's a completely disturbed size - it's more than just a Chevrolet Silverado.

The headlights were of the Honda Civic, the rear was influenced by the design of those in the Ferrari F40.

From the first Batmobile of 1966 it left the jet engine, here the "professional literature" is absolutely amazing - 10,000 hp, 242 kg, acceleration to 96 km / h in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 530 km / h, but only With the boost of the jet - not just like that ...

The list of standard equipment issued for this car has two Browning 0.3 machine guns, an iron hook launcher that is connected by a cable to the car and serves as an anchor to allow it to turn sharply, a ball bomb release device, oil tank for scattering on the road, Smoke masking and more.

She had something else from the first Batmobile, the ability to move around the place, but she does it with a hydraulic "leg" that goes down to the ground, elevates the car in the air and rotates it in place.

But let go - the hysterical bullshit this Batmobile has - is that when Batman would leave it and say "shields" it would be covered with bulletproof, fire and corona shield boards (just, no corona, there is a limit).

It is interesting to note that in the first film this effect was achieved in a stop-motion technique, i.e. connecting a sequence of images to create the illusion of video.

In the second film, in 1992 it was already done in computer animation.

The back fin rose to a height of more than 3 meters, very practical ... (Photo: AP)

In 1993 the baton is transferred from the genius Burton to Joel Schumacher, who he was, well - not a genius like Tim Burton and I'm gentle.

Under his baton come the first "Batman Forever" and "Batman and Robin" in 1995 and the second in 1997.

The first was a dizzying success, the second a failure after which the Warner Bros. company refused to allow him to direct the sequel.

The Batmobile is also replaced, and instead of that amazing machine of the first movies we got one of the ugliest in Batman's company cars.

While the first one was exaggerated but in a forceful and threatening way, this car was exaggerated and threatening like a cockroach threatens - in that you're a little disgusted to touch it, it also looks a bit like an insect or lizard with those bows and "eyes" no?

Although when it comes to the construction itself behind the car this is one of the most advanced movie cars of its time,

So much was invested in it, and in the end a combination of an insect with a lizard (Photo: AP)

Its length exceeded even that of the Batmobile that preceded it;

7 feet long, the width remained the same with 2.4 feet, but its rear roof fin rose to a height of 3.2 feet.

The propulsion was controlled by a 350-horsepower Chevrolet V8 engine from the small-block series, which with a booster brought it to 531 km / h.

In the accessories department, she, too, used metal hooks, but not to turn sharply, but to drive up the walls of buildings.

It also had wheels that could turn 90 degrees and allow it to travel sideways, jet exits at the bottom of the front that using short jet bursts could cause it to lift its bow to fire the metal hooks and more.

This batmobile ended its life when Edward Nigma (Riddler or "Man of Riddles") fills her cabin with explosives.

Never has a villain in a comic book movie done such a good deed.

The wheels could rotate 90 degrees and allow it to move to the side (Photo: Screenshot, WB)

The next Batmobile in the series, that of "Batman and Robin" was supposed to be something completely different, the director Schumacher and also the film designers wanted something bigger than this car ever was, with more fins, more length, more jet exhaust, more lighting - and the result was - ornate Appalling.

And it's a shame that there really was an attempt to invest, the tires for example.

No tire fit this car and they used a prototype made especially by Goodyear, and since there were no tire slots, they created one - in the shape of the Batman logo.

And it was indeed very long, with 10 meters from the bow to the tail, but with a single seat (actually in a movie called Batman and Robin ...).

In fact because the car was so expensive to build, they only made one of them, and because they only made one of them most of the driving stunts in the movie are done with scaled-down models or using computer animation - and that looks very bad.

In practice the car itself is seen in the film in two short scenes, in the opening and in pursuit of Mr. Paris it is hit and crashed.

Which does not prevent her from suddenly appearing healthy and whole in one of the scenes later when she is standing in the Bat Cave.

The Tumblr started as a military vehicle (Photo: AP)

The next film series in the series, directed by Christopher Nolan was a new chapter in the story of Batman.

The Dark Knight trilogy that included "Batman Begins", "The Dark Knight" and "The Rise of the Dark Knight" brought to the stage a completely different car.

No more attempts to present a vehicle designed in the "classic" way of meaning - but one that corresponds with the new character of Batman.

Rough, rough and also very violent.

Its designers wanted to produce a tool that was the perfect means of law enforcement, the one that was built without budget constraints and without any aesthetic considerations - and that's exactly what it is.

Its planners did something that was not done when building or designing such a car.

They did not start with drawings or sketches - they just bought models of military hammers, tanks and Lamborghini cars and started connecting them.

As part of the promotion of the film, Honda's Formula 1 team joined the studios (Photo: Manufacturer's website)

A major difference between the Tumblr, as it is officially called, and other automobiles is that this vehicle is fundamentally so massively constructed that, with the exception of a few scenes, all stunts are performed by the vehicles themselves.

From the crazy jumps, explosions, passage through walls and vehicles and even the chase in the tunnel, where this vehicle reached a speed of 160 km / h, in fact the production had to improve the camera vehicle that accompanied it (Mercedes ML55) to keep up. The stunt driver inside used In three cameras placed in the corners of the vehicle to drive it in. The vehicle also had a real ability to "launch" itself into a jump, and it recorded one at a distance of 9.1 meters without damaging the vehicle.

And it's not an easy task to control this vehicle, because even though it was shorter than any other Batmobile with "only" 4.6 meters from end to end, it was very wide, 2.8 meters and very heavy - 2.3 tons.

The power to propel all this tank-car comes from a 5.7-liter Chevrolet V8 engine with 500 hp. This allows it results measured in the real world like acceleration to 96 km / h in 5.6 seconds and a top speed of 260 km / h.

Combination of Lamborghini and Hammer (Photo: AP)

The Tumblr, which according to the film was originally a product of the military wing of Wayne Industries and was intended to serve as combatants to pass through places where bridges were bombed or completely disrupted access roads, also featured one of the longest and most impressive equipment lists, common items like front machine guns, rocket launchers, The jet engine, automatic fire extinguishing systems and more, also had a camouflage system that makes it invisible, by projecting the background onto the vehicle body, and beyond electric propulsion which also makes it very quiet.

And of course his ability to shed the chassis over it and turn into a vehicle reminiscent of a motorcycle using the front wheels.

The new Batmobile, a wink to the muscle cars (Photo: AP)

The new film released this year shows another significant change of direction in the story of the Batmobile.

No longer some completely unfounded car, which has a very faint connection with the term "vehicle", but a car that looks like a particularly wild take on an American muscle car with a certain resemblance, to the 71 '-72' barracuda Plymouth.

Director Matt Reeves' idea was probably to put Batman in the plot of the current film in a car that matches the point in time he is in - about two years after starting his career as an independent justice fighter.

Batman of the current film is portrayed as an even darker and more solitary character, with a violent personality, and less so Bruce Wayne the socialite and charmer of the other films.

From what little the director said in interviews about the Batmobile, according to the plot the car was built by Batman alone from remnants of vehicles.

And its appearance certainly matches this rude attitude, not the elegant lines of the Batmobiles of previous years and far from the high-tech-Transformer look of the Tumblr.

There were more Batmobiles in Batman's world, like the one from the Justice League (Photo: AP)

What else can be said about her?

Two cars were built for the benefit of the film, one with a 650 hp V8 engine and the other car will be surprised to hear it was built on a Tesla base - it turns out that Batman in 2022 needs to keep not only Guttham safe, but also the environment

. About a man who fights criminals in the guise of a flying mouse, but a closer look at the new Batmobile certainly raises strange questions like the fact that even though the engine appears to be in the back, there are exhaust exits from the hood, what's three on each side, and if it's a V8 engine, there should probably be 4 What else? At least in the picture you see two turbochargers the size of your head - I hope they are for decoration, because if they work and someone is sitting in a chair next to them he can part with his sense of hearing.

"Batman": 120 minutes of so-so, 50 minutes of wow

And there was even one Lego (Photo: AP)

In this article we have chosen to focus on the cars that have appeared in the movie series, however apart from these cars, in Batman's "world" there are very many other versions of the Batmobile.

Aside from the comic books, she has also appeared in various films within the world of DC Comics like Batman vs. Superman, Suicide Squad, Justice League, even in the Lego Batman movie, which is, well a Batman Lego movie, what is not clear.

And they included a variety of vehicles, from one that actually looked like a tank to the Batmobile of the Batman animated series from the late 90s that looks like a combination of Hotrod from the 30s, Bugatti Veyron and packaging of a Pringles snack.

A bit like the James Bond cars, over the years the Batmobile has played a regular role as the sub-character of the protagonist himself.

A bit like James Bond cars it has always been loaded with gadgets and technology.

Maybe it has to do with the particular resemblance there is between the two characters - a somewhat complicated personality who is committed to doing justice as she sees it without obeying the rules and with a forgiving permission from society to kill on the way there?

We'll leave this analysis to Walla Culture, we'll just pick our favorite Batmobile and you will say who it is that you like best.
