Buzz transports VW's Bulli into the electric age.

Here are the first photos of the space miracle – which, however, cannot go particularly fast.

Hanover – It was leaked early on that VW was launching a fully electric VW bus.

Technical details were also clear relatively quickly: although it is a model from the commercial vehicle division from Hanover, the ID.

Buzz on the "modular electric drive kit" (MEB), which was actually designed for cars and which also carries the VW ID.5*, for example.

Even a first test drive with the electric Bulli* was already possible.

But VW kept a closely guarded secret about one very important thing: the design of the classic that was relaunched with batteries.

The name is supposed to remind you of that: Buzz speaks like Bus in English (“bass”) – and as “Microbus” the transporters officially named T1 and T2 made a career in the USA at the end of the 1960s as a cult vehicle for hippies and surfers.

So it's no wonder that the electric bus should also benefit from this nostalgia - as the first photos without camouflage show, which VW is now making available.

The car version is aimed at families and electric fans with space requirements; it is optionally available with traditional two-tone paintwork.

Sales will start later this year.

VW is still keeping quiet about the price, but you have to reckon with around 60,000 euros for the car version – from which a gross environmental bonus of 7,975 euros can be deducted.

The sliding doors and the large tailgate have always been part of the Bulli.

The electric new edition is relatively compact at 4.71 meters in length and 26 centimeters shorter than the conventional VW Bus T7 Multivan*.

The Stromer is slightly wider at 1.98 meters.

Height: 1.94 meters.

There will be a longer version with a larger wheelbase, especially for the USA.

LED light is standard, there is an extra charge for complex matrix technology.

An LED clip connects the two headlights with the VW emblem – which, as a homage to the T1 from the 1950s, is emblazoned larger than on any other current VW model.

However, traditionalists have to do without the split windscreen of the original Bulli.

The E-Bulli can also be clearly identified from the rear, also with LED lights and a connecting light bar.

Even in the more expensive equipment variants, VW does not offer leather - instead, synthetic material is used on the steering wheel, which is supposed to feel like animal skin and look similar.

The seat covers are partly made from recycled materials, such as PET bottles and plastic salvaged from the sea.

The arrangement of the batteries in the underbody and the 150 kilowatt (204 hp) and 310 Nm electric motor on the rear axle allows for ample space on a wheelbase of 2,988 millimeters.

The top speed is already limited at 145 km/h.

VW has not yet given any information on the range of the five-seater with a net 77 kW battery, but it should be around 400 kilometers.

In the standard configuration, the E-Bulli offers 1,121 liters of storage space behind its five seats. If the second row of seats is folded down completely, the loading volume increases to up to 2,205 liters.

The planned version with a longer wheelbase will be available as a seven-seater.
