Actor William Hart has passed away.

His son Will wrote tonight on Twitter: "With great sorrow, the family announces the death of our beloved father, a week before his 71st birthday. He died peacefully, surrounded by family, for natural reasons. We would like to respect our privacy."

Hart was one of the best character actors of American cinema of our generation.

It broke out in the 1980s, thanks to starring in several films by director Lawrence Casden - led by the fiery thriller "Body Heat," and the melancholic dramas "Alex's Friends" and "Casual Tourist."

He also starred in "News Broadcasters," a satire on the media world that was recorded as one of the brightest and wittiest films of the 1980s, and its content only became more relevant over the years.

Hart was nominated for an Oscar for his role in this film, as well as on three other occasions - the most recent being "History of Violence" in 2005.

He won once, for "The Spider-Woman Kiss" from 1985, in which he played the character of a homosexual prisoner.

Roger Ebert, a senior American film critic in the 1980s, wrote at the time about Hart "he is one of the best actors we have, and the most intelligent of them all."

Hart announces Marley Matalin as an Oscar winner

For the contemporary generation, Hart may be known as General Ross from the Marvel movies - the forgotten "green giant" but also some more successful movies, including "Black Widow" from last summer.

His last appearance was recorded, unfortunately, in the puzzling and failed film "The King's Daughter", whose production began as early as 2014, but its distribution has only taken place in recent months.

Hart had relationships with many women, including actress Marley Matalin, who starred alongside him in "Stepchildren for God."

He was nominated for an Oscar and did not win.

She was nominated for an Oscar and won, making her the first and last deaf person to win this award in the acting category.

Hart, a colleague and her partner at the time, was the one who opened the envelope on stage and declared her the winner.

Hart had four children - one from French filmmaker Sandrine Bonner, one from Sandra Jennings and two from Heidi Henderson.
