While American Airlines did not initially respond to the report, a company spokesman recently confirmed the incident in a statement saying: "Following an investigation with our flight crew and additional information received, we can confirm that this radio broadcast did indeed come from American Airlines Flight 2292 on February 21."

The Federal Aviation Administration added in its announcement that air traffic controllers "did not see any object in the area according to their radar."

The observation soon became one of the most significant UFO sightings of 2021, as it was one of a number of triggers that encouraged experts to demand greater transparency from the U.S. government regarding UFO investigations.

In September last year, the Daily Star reported that anonymous pilots had confessed that they were afraid to talk about their observations for fear of losing their jobs.

One pilot said airline executives were so hostile to alien claims that one of his colleagues was required to seek psychiatric advice after reporting an UFO. Another said: "When someone says UFOs, everyone thinks they mean aliens but that is not always the case, especially with the jump In the glider activity. Most pilots will use phrases like unidentified traffic or aerial phenomena. No one wants to say UFOs.

"If you say UFOs people think you're drunk, drugged or crazy."

Another pilot added: “Many pilots of airlines, including me, and even military pilots have encountered high altitudes in UFOs for many decades, and long before the advent of the internet.

Meetings are reported internally and between colleagues and rarely reach the media.

When you're lucky enough to be up close and personal, it really does look pretty serious.
