Electric car interest unabated - despite long waiting times

The purchase premium is to be adjusted from 2023.
Despite long waiting times, this has little effect on interest in electric cars.
Berlin – The war in Ukraine has set new records for fuel prices in Germany*.
The electric car could therefore have become even more interesting for many new car buyers.
After all, a kilowatt hour of electricity costs only a fraction in comparison.
However, there is one problem: the long delivery times for new cars.
Because the automotive industry is still suffering from the lack of chips, which could be exacerbated by the war in Ukraine*.
In addition, many manufacturers source their wiring harnesses from the Eastern European country and have corresponding production problems.
As a result, customers have to wait a long time for many new cars – even less than a year for popular electric cars or plug-in hybrids.
Electric car interest unabated - despite long waiting times
First of all, this is not a problem, but in connection with the purchase bonus it is.
This is based on the approval date and not on the time of the order.
Electric cars are currently subsidized with up to 9,000 euros, for a plug-in hybrid there is up to 6,750 euros.
However, the environmental bonus will be realigned from 2023*.
Means: Anyone who now orders a Stromer with a long waiting period will, in case of doubt, receive less money from the state.
From 2023 there will be changes to the environmental bonus.
Most prospective customers are not unsettled by this.

It is not yet clear how high the subsidy will be, but it should be based more on the actual climate protection effect.
In addition, buyers will then have to keep their car longer* than before.
So the question is: Does this affect the buying behavior of customers?
The answer is provided by a study by the opinion research company Civey, which was reported on by Automobilwoche.
Electric car interest unabated - uncertainty about the purchase premium has hardly any effect
Accordingly, at 41 percent, most of the more than 5,000 interested parties surveyed are not influenced by the uncertainties.
Only a quarter are deterred by the cuts.
And the long delivery times only play a role for just under every fifth (18 percent).
However, the effect is only weak or not very strong.
16 percent of respondents said they were still unsure.

The difference between regions with a very high population density and more rural areas is also interesting.
In heavily populated regions, the situation only has a “very strong” effect on every tenth participant.
In rural areas, on the other hand, almost every third person (28.5 percent) is influenced by the long delivery times for electric cars.
There are also clear differences from a political point of view.
Left (68 percent) and Greens (65 percent) cannot be stopped from buying a Stromer or only slightly influenced.
In the case of the FDP and the Union, however, 35 and 34 percent respectively say that the environmental bonus has a strong influence.
