The distance between these two piers is 2023 meters - and that is why the Canakkale Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the world, at least in terms of its span.

Either way, it's an impressive structure spanning the Dardanelles.

A famous strait between the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean Sea - which also separates the European and Asian parts of Turkey.

Instead of ferries, the route of the 0-6 motorway now runs six lanes over the bridge, which has a total length of almost 6 kilometers.

Its name, Cakkanale 1915, commemorates the Battle of Gallipolli during World War I.

It is one of several major construction projects by the Erdogan government.

It has been finished since the end of February - today it was officially opened for traffic - and also used a lot, as can be seen in these pictures.
