On average, electric cars are cheaper to drive than combustion engines.

The comparison portal “Verivox” has calculated how much more diesel and petrol engines cost.

Heidelberg – Slowly but surely, fuel prices in Germany are falling again and the price of crude oil is also becoming cheaper again.

Nevertheless, diesel and petrol are still extremely expensive.

The situation is different with electric cars, as reported by 24auto.de.

Providers such as Hamburg Energie and Stadtwerke München have announced increases here as well, but these are still a long way from the prices that are currently being charged at the pumps.

“In view of the high prices for petrol and diesel, everyone who drives an e-car is currently saving a lot of money.

The average costs for petrol and diesel are currently more than twice as high," emphasizes Thorsten Storck, energy expert at "Verivox".

High fuel prices: electric cars are cheaper in comparison

In 2020, the average energy consumption of the ten most frequently registered electric cars was 19 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers.

With an average electricity price of 37.02 cents per kilowatt hour, the costs per route add up to 7.04 euros.

With an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers, the costs were 1055 euros.

Meanwhile, drivers of combustion engines had to dig much deeper into their pockets.

For their calculation, the experts from “Verivox” assumed consumption of 7.7 liters per 100 kilometers and a price of 2.20 euros for the petrol engines.

The fuel costs were therefore 16.94 euros.

Extrapolated to 15,000 kilometers, that is 2541 euros per year and thus 59 percent more than with electric cars.

High fuel prices: Diesel drivers pay 57 percent more

The diesel drivers get off a little better.

With an average consumption of seven liters per 100 kilometers and a diesel price of 2.317, an average of 16.22 euros flowed into the tank.

With an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers, that makes 2433 euros and thus 57 percent more than with electric cars.

However, these savings relate to electric cars that are charged at home, for example at a wall box.

The costs can be higher at public charging stations.

In addition, the savings also depend on the current fuel prices, the difference is currently smaller again.

Nevertheless, it is not surprising that, according to a survey, every tenth German household is considering switching to an electric car in the next two years.

The long delivery times and possible losses in the environmental bonus are hardly a deterrent.
