Is a Jeep Compass a Jeep? We got confused - Walla! vehicle

Jeep's Jeep bears the right name, with the right design and positioning, but comes with an engine and propulsion that is not done with it and with the Grace brand

Is a Jeep Compass a Jeep?

We were confused

The Jeep's compact crossover returns to us with an improved cabin, and slight exterior changes.

In the face of growing competition, is this enough to justify a price range between NIS 190,000 and NIS 230,000?

To begin this road test with a clean slate, let's remove from the table the emotional-technological question: Is Compass a real Jeep?

The question is important not only because the Jeep brand has tremendous emotional value, but because it will set the proper level of expectations from the redesigned Compass.

The family connection is obvious - on the front and back is written Jeep, the front grille includes the seven mythical slots Since 1942, and you know what?

The compass is reminiscent in shape of the Grand Cherokee which is without a doubt, a real Jeep.

Not as tough as a Wrangler, but definitely a Jeep.

The Compass never claimed to be a dedicated SUV, not even in the rugged Trailhawk version.

The problem is that the configuration imported to Israel is the most urban in existence: the three trim levels are armed with a 1.3-liter engine supercharged from Fiat shelves, they have a 6-speed dual-clutch robotic gearbox, they are not even 4X4 - only front-wheel drive versions are imported to Israel today.

This does not prevent the advertising videos from showing Compass in a selection of tough poses, but it does not make a difference.

So we will conquer our expectations from the Jeep brand and look at the Compass as we are looking at the Hyundai Tucson (and soon a new Sportage), Peugeot 3008, Nissan Qashqai, why not Rab4?

The compass is more expensive than most of its competitors, even though they are larger and stronger than it.

The base version Longitude costs NIS 189,000 and includes 17-inch rims, LED headlights, automatic braking and lane departure control, an 8.4-inch touch screen.

The importer estimates that most customers will prefer the 80th Anniversary version, which costs NIS 214,000 and adds 18-inch rims, a parking package, a 10.1-inch touch screen and a panoramic sunroof, leather-like seat upholstery.

The test car in the S-Model version costs "starting" at NIS 229,000 and includes all of the above and other electrically adjustable leather seats, an electric trunk door, roof rails and 19-inch brown rims wearing 235 / 45R19 sporty tires.

Eyes sight

The Compass-S looks good;

It carries the design DNA of Jeep, a right point for brand lovers.

There is the familiar logo and grill, with modern and angled lighting units.

The body is square and relatively tall, it has a presence even though it is about 10 centimeters shorter than some of its competitors.

The facelift has improved the lighting units and front grille.

The browned rims are beautiful and the rear features a double-barreled exhaust, a bit excessive for a 1.3-liter engine, isn't it?

The test vehicle wears 19-inch rims with 45-inch tires;

It's sporty looking but does not really connect with my Jeep.

The cabin has undergone a serious improvement.

In the senior versions you will get a 10.1-inch screen, in the base version only 8.4 (Photo: Rami Gilboa)

The cabin has undergone a more impressive upgrade;

In the S version, we received high-quality leather upholstery and upholstery materials for touch and appearance.

There is a successful combination of plastic, leather and chrome, it looks good (though not 'premium' to the extent that it is trying to broadcast in the showroom).

The seats are comfortable and supportive, with a high seating position.

The improvement over the outgoing version is significant, the designers were able to put into the cabin a more sophisticated feel than is acceptable in the category.

A 10.25-inch dashboard is installed in front of the driver, and the main 10.1-inch touchscreen is clear and high-quality;

It's colorful and fast, the reversing camera is good, and the U-Connect system is definitely satisfying.

We were happy to find plenty of physical switches that make it easier to operate the air conditioner, the sound and other trifles, which are not hidden between layers of annoying menus.

There is full connectivity, plenty of charging sockets (including 230 volts), air conditioning outlets for the back seat.

The rear seat is reasonable for two adults, not much more.

The trunk holds 438 liters, less than most competitors.

The upholstery and upholstery materials have greatly improved.

the Italian Job

Jeep Compass is marketed worldwide with a selection of engines - in the United States it is sold with 2.4 liters 177 horsepower, in Asian markets there is a 2.0 liter diesel version, there is also a hybrid that was previously sold in Israel and may return to us.

Today beats the Italian 1.3-liter Compass bow, mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission.

With 150 hp and a curb weight of one and a half tons, this compass is not fast and powerful. 9.2 seconds from zero to 100 is not terrible, but a slow gearbox dictates too calm conduct; Full.This is also reflected in a rather disappointing fuel consumption - on a relaxed urban trip we were unable to get more than 12.3 liters per kilometer, not brilliant.

The back seat is enough for two adults.

Road customs

The S-Model version we drove wears sporty-looking 235 / 45R19 tires, which do no favors with ride comfort.

The shock absorbers are calibrated for comfort, but the 45-inch tires transfer the road disruptions to your buttocks.

It is impossible to say that the compass beats its passengers, but it lacks progressive softness at the beginning of the move.

On good roads it is quite reasonable, urban asphalt may be a nuisance;

I guess in the base versions (which wear less sporty tires) it will be more comfortable.

The higgle is very light and the road behavior is similar to what you would expect from an elevated crossover - not a driving machine, but a vehicle that knows how to maintain a satisfying pace of progress.

There are 6 airbags, automatic braking and lane keeping, "dead zone" vehicle alerts and adaptive cruise control.

Compass 2X4 can cross soft trails, not much more than that (Photo: Rami Gilboa)

Trail customs

I would not bother to refer to the terrain capability of the Compass but the importer's publications do, so so do I.

There is no reason to expect the Compass to be more passable than any other crossover, but it's not even one of the best in the category;

Its ventral spacing is just 19.8 inches (less than the category leaders), the suspension moves are limited, the 45 tires of the S version are vulnerable, and under the front bumper protrudes a low rubber skirt, which goes for anything other than an ironed trail.

The skirt is made of a flexible and tolerant material but is very low;

Hello, is this a Jeep?

It's a shame, because Sergeant could bring us some 4X4 version and even the TrailHawk;

The Compass TrailHawk could have cost NIS 235-240 thousand in Israel, and be the most moving crossover in the category, better than the Forester for example.

I guess it's not easy (or impossible?) To get a triathlon assignment but still, I will allow myself to regret it.

I guess this is also the reason why there is currently no import of a hybrid compass.

The rubber skirt is flexible and durable in appearance, but it is completely unnecessary, in my opinion (Photo: Rami Gilboa)

Returning to the stable

Jeep Compass 2022 is better than its previous generations, especially in terms of atmosphere and quality of materials in the cabin.

It is up-to-date and special in its design, with a resembling resemblance to the iconic brand from which it was born.

His multimedia system is good, and so is the human engineering that is not too sophisticated.

The Compass is not 'prestigious' as they try to paint it but in the phrase "I bought a Jeep Jeep" there is a magic that can not be ignored;

Not to mention the keychain with the considered logo.

Compass's problem is that its competitors have also made impressive leaps, and that it comes in a configuration that does it no favors - engine and ride comfort that are not brilliant, and high prices relative to its exterior dimensions.

These figures will make it difficult for him to shell out sales, but the coveted brand will be able to attract customers to the showroom;

Certainly in light of the fact that there are compasses in immediate availability.
