Oscar-winning director and actor Sean Penn has called on members of the academy to allow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zlansky to speak at tonight's Oscars (Sunday-Monday), and if not - boycott the ceremony and publicly hold his Oscar statuettes.
In an interview with CNN, Penn, who is currently filming a documentary about the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and who was in Ukraine at the beginning of the war and met with Zalansky, explained:
"I understood that there was no intention to do that. I do not advise Zlansky how to act."
Penn said that if the academy chose not to side with the Ukrainian leadership, which "snatches bullets and bombs for us, along with the Ukrainian children they are trying to protect, I think it will be the greatest certificate of poverty in Hollywood history."
