It happened in eastern Pennsylvania, around 10:30 p.m.
Visibility was extremely poor and drivers saw only a white screen in front.
Some simply did not slow down, others slowed down but could not avoid a collision with other vehicles, which they did not notice.
Three trailer trucks caught fire, and huge traffic jams formed.
Police said that until the fire is completely extinguished they will not be able to investigate the incident.
A Pennsylvania police officer who arrived at the scene explained: "All it takes is one driver to collide. It will make you try to deviate from the road, but when you do it in such conditions and with such speed - that's the result."
One of the drivers involved said: "It was crazy, the snow and fog mixed and nothing could be seen.
