European regulator launches review of Spanish HIPRA vaccine

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced on Tuesday the launch of the review procedure for the vaccine against Covid-19 from the Spanish multinational HIPRA.

"Preliminary results suggest that the immune response to the Spanish HIPRA vaccine could be effective against SARS-CoV-2, including variants that are of concern such as Omicron

," the EMA said in a statement.

The Agency, whose headquarters are in Amsterdam, did not specify how long the study procedure for this first Spanish vaccine, called PHH-1V, would take.

PHH-1V is based on the process of recombinant proteins, a formula also used by the American company Novavax and the partnership between the French laboratory Sanofi and the British GSK.

It is a vaccine

“which prepares the body to defend itself”

against Covid-19, writes the EMA.

Vaccines suitable for Omicron not available before 'autumn' in EU

German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach estimated on Tuesday that vaccines adapted to the Omicron variant would not be available in the EU

“until the autumn”.

Arriving at a meeting with his counterparts in Brussels, he said that

“to his knowledge”

the development of these vaccines was

“delayed”.

"So I don't expect the new vaccines suitable (for Covid-19 variants) to be available until the fall

," he said, adding that

"September could be a target month."

“That is why it is very important that we do not wait for the arrival of new suitable vaccines to proceed with the fourth vaccination

,” he said.

Germany is currently recommending a new booster dose for people over 70, particularly vulnerable people and healthcare workers.

The German minister wants a recommendation from the European regulator for a
