Subscriptions are in vogue, including for game consoles. After Microsoft is making billions with its Game Pass, Sony now wants to follow suit. Three new offers should bind gamers to the group at a monthly price.

Sony is restructuring its Playstation Plus games subscription service.

From June there will be two new subscriptions called Extra and Premium, and the streaming service Playstation Now will be merged into the expanded Playstation Plus, as the company announces in its Playstation blog.

The previous Playstation Plus subscription will be renamed Playstation Plus Essential.

It still costs nine euros a month and, according to the information, offers, among other things, two download games per month and online multiplayer functionality for many games.

The new Playstation Plus Extra also offers access to around 400 games for Playstation (PS) 4 and 5, which can also be downloaded and are said to come from Sony itself and from third parties.

Cost: 14 euros per month.

Streaming only with the premium subscription

The most expensive subscription called Playstation Plus Premium (17 euros per month) is an extension of the subscriptions that are priced below.

There is also streaming functionality, i.e. so-called cloud gaming, and around 340 other titles.

These include streaming games for the PS3 as well as games from a classic catalog for PS, PS2 and Playstation Portable (PSP), which can be downloaded or streamed.

Streaming the games, i.e. playing without having to download and install the games beforehand, should work with PS4, PS5 and PCs as before with Playstation Now.

In addition, there are test versions in the premium subscription to try out games before you buy them.

The following applies to all subscriptions: If you don't pay monthly, but quarterly or even annually, you get a discount.

The new Playstation Plus will be rolled out regionally, starting with the Asian markets in June, followed by North America and Europe.

Sony did not initially say exactly when the start in Germany was planned, but did name a few titles that are planned to be available in medium and large subscriptions at market launch: "Death Stranding", "God of War", "Marvel's Spider-Man", Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal.
