The fact that, in view of the high fuel prices, people fill their tanks with salad oil instead of diesel – that can only be a joke.
A motorist in Great Britain apparently really used vegetable oil.
The
video of an extremely strange scene
that is said to have taken place in a supermarket car park in Great Britain is causing a lot of discussion on the Internet.
You can see how a man has parked a shopping cart next to the car, in which there are several bottles with vegetable oil*.
The man first opens one bottle and
then seemingly simply pours the cooking oil into the tank
, followed by another bottle with the vegetable oil.
Does he really want to use it to fill up his car?
The Cheshire Live
portal first reported on this
on March 17th.
"
I filmed it and when I walked past him, he first took all the caps off the bottles, that made me laugh.
He obviously thought it through carefully," the portal quotes an observer who filmed the strange scene and shared the video on Facebook, as the report says, among other things.
And
The Sun
newspaper also commented on the video on Twitter - a customer of the supermarket chain Tesco filmed this "strange moment" when someone filled a car with cooking oil - while petrol prices were rising.
Video: Man fills up cooking oil in the tank - more than just a joke?
Motorist uses cooking oil from the supermarket – the video causes numerous comments
It has often been joked on Twitter in recent weeks that, in view of the high fuel prices, people are now resorting to cooking oil.
Jokes aside - the Brit at the said supermarket car park seemed to be serious.
And caused a lot of conversation with his action.
The video went viral on social media, according to a report on
Stern.de.
Of course, there were also numerous comments from users.
Cooking oil as a diesel substitute?
Not a good idea, warns the ADAC
In the meantime, anyone who has ever seriously toyed with the idea of simply pouring salad oil into the tank instead of diesel in view of the increased fuel costs will quickly teach the experts otherwise.
Last but not least, the ADAC urgently advised against such an idea, because modern diesel engines would not tolerate salad oil.
"The biggest problem is the clear difference in viscosity compared to conventional diesel," said the article
on
ADAC.de.
"Vegetable oils lead to
starting difficulties
and have a negative effect on the performance and
service life of the engine
." The comparatively viscous vegetable oil is for the
injection pump
and
injectors
not suitable for modern diesel cars and, in the worst case, can also damage the engine and fuel system, as the ADAC also described.
Older diesels with much lower injection pressures and distributor injection pumps could occasionally get along with vegetable oils.
But be careful: "The service life of these engines is also limited here in the long term," the automobile club continues on its website.
Some
engines
can be converted to run on
vegetable oils
, according to a report by the German Press Agency with reference to the ADAC - but that means costs between 1,500 and 5,000 euros including installation.
And even then there is still a tax hurdle to overcome: as soon as vegetable oil is used as a fuel, the energy tax comes into play.
You are therefore obliged to submit a tax declaration to the responsible main customs office and to pay taxes.
