The launch pad of NASA's Artemis 1 rocket was hit by several lightning bolts last Saturday. The rocket itself was not damaged, and U.S. space agency technicians continue to work on the current test - a refueling attempt, which is actually a "general rehearsal" ahead of the launch later this year. According to NASA, the lightning was at low intensity, but the fourth lightning strike in Tower 1, out of the three protection towers, was stronger. Parsons, NASA's Deputy Director for Ground Research Systems.
"The lightning struck one of the concave cables running between the towers. The system worked as expected, keeping SLS and Orion safe. We're glad we improved the defense!", Parsons added.
Artemis 1 is NASA's first SLS mission to return astronauts to the moon by 2025. Its first flight, along with the Orion crew cabin, will be an unmanned mission around the moon, to test the spacecraft, which will carry experiments and a dummy doll covered in sensors NASA is scheduled to deliver this morning, Israel time, a report on the refueling experiment that took place during the lightning storm.
