After sitting very long on the fence, Lexus, like its parent company Toyota, is entering the world of electricity with its first dedicated model.

So far the company has marketed the small UX in an electric version, but this is its first model built on an electric platform designed for this from the beginning when the basis for a model is shared by it and the Toyota BZ4X introduced a few months ago.

Like its platform brother, Lexus went for a sharp design with the fashionable "coupe" silhouette, particularly noticeable in its absence is the large "hourglass" grille that characterizes the manufacturer's models.

Here it is in a general mention of the contours created by the front.

In terms of dimensions, with 481 cm in length, 190 cm in width, it is slightly larger than the current NX, 164 cm in height are 2.5 cm less than it.

On the other hand, the wheelbase benefits from the use of the electric platform and stands at 285 cm, which is a much more significant 16 cm than the NX.

If in the past the driver environment in Lexus was not one of the most impressive in its group, the current NX was the first encounter with a significant change of direction in this area and the RZ at least according to the photos continues the positive trend.

The center console facing the driver, the large touch screen alongside physical buttons for the main functions, a dial for navigating between the menus and also a voice activation.

Lexus will also offer as an option a rudder in a YOKE structure, one with a flat bottom and no top like a rudder.

On the basic engineering problematic of such proud, which do not allow continuous hand movement on the steering wheel, Toyota says it overcomes through its electronic steering system, which allows access from lock to lock at 150 degrees, ie without having to cross hands or change their position.

But the technical hurdle may prove less difficult than the regulatory one, as Tesla learned when it introduced the YOKE option in the new Model S.

Other features that Lexus is proud of in the cabin include an active noise cancellation system that uses the car's speakers and a panoramic roof that becomes opaque with the driver's choice, here too, a solution similar to what BMW offers in the iX.

Safety systems include, among other things, vehicle identification in a "dead zone", including preventing the opening of a door with locating a vehicle that may endanger passengers, adaptive cruise control, automatic braking and lane departure correction, all of which have improved detection range In conditions of traffic jams or low speed.

In terms of propulsion, Lexus uses a single engine-transmission-control unit that is "packaged" in one common assembly.

This is a solution that BMW is also adopting in the current generation of its electric propulsion systems, as in the case of the iX.

The advantage of this solution is space saving, weight and a minimum of power loss on the way to the wheels.

The RZ450e has two electric motors, the front with 201 hp and the rear with 107 hp that connect to a common power of 308 hp and 44.4 kg.

This combination also means that the propulsion is dual, and here is dominated by what Lexus calls the DIRECT4 system that divides the torque between the front and rear wheels within a millisecond, the fastest system in the industry they say.

Performance stands at 5.6 seconds per 100 km / h and 160 km / h maximum.

Aiming for a range of "over 400 km" Exact data have not yet been published (Photo: Manufacturer's website)

A 71.4 kWh battery is responsible for the energy supply at the bottom of the vehicle, which is also part of the car's chassis. The declared range of the car is "over 400 km" without specifying the exact number.

Both the range and its name - 450e which is usually attached to the more powerful versions of the manufacturer imply that in the future also more moderate versions will be introduced in power, but that may very well present a higher range.

Currently, it is aligning with its relevant competitors in this version, whether it be Audi Q4 ETRON, Volvo C40, Genesis GV60 and others.

At this point, the manufacturer also did not provide information about the speed and charging capabilities of the battery.

As with the Toyota BZ4X, Lexus is committed to battery durability that will preserve 90% of its capabilities even after 10 years of being on the road.

According to importer Lexus RZ is expected to arrive in Israel in the last quarter of 2022, so similar to its situation in the rest of the world, until its arrival in showrooms, this model and Lexus in general may find itself trying to squeeze into a segment already marked as a very crowded arena of competitors.
