The SUV version of the luxury electric vehicle EQS is rolling out.

The first photos show a more pleasing design than the sedan

Stuttgart – Mercedes is pushing the electrification of its model range.

And since luxury vehicles have always been at the core of the brand, after the electric counterpart to the S-Class, the EQS sedan, the SUV version is now at the start.

So basically a GLS as a Stromer - but which still lacks an independent, catchy name.

But what is already there (after the first press test drive in camouflaged cars) are the first official photos: Compared to the EQS sedan, the SUV looks a bit more pleasing and less polarizing, as 24auto.de finds.

The 5.13 meter long crossover has a wheelbase of 3.21 meters, which is just as long as the sedan.

As is typical for SUVs, however, the new model is 20 centimeters higher, reaching an impressive 1.72 meters – which is somewhat concealed visually by the sloping roof line, which is typical of a contemporary coupé.

In addition, the EQS SUV is on visually dominant 20 to 22 inch wheels.

In any case, the proportions are all-round successful and should also appeal to drivers who have little to do with the expressive design of other electric SUVs such as the future BMW XM.

“The EQS SUV is the third vehicle on our new all-electric platform.

It has everything that our customers appreciate about the EQS - and combines that with the strengths and versatility of an SUV that can accommodate up to seven people," advertises Mercedes boss Ola Källenius.

In fact, the interior of the new Benz SUV offers a lot of space and is more reminiscent of a feel-good lounge than of an automobile.

The seats in the first two rows can be adjusted electrically - also to get into the (mechanically foldable) third row with manageable effort if it moves forward by almost 30 centimeters.

Since parents can sometimes lose track of things, a new technology reminds them of children left in the rear of the vehicle when they get out.

The leather rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio.

Depending on the seat configuration, the load compartment holds between 565 and 2,020 liters.

The displays stretch out in front of the front occupants and appear under a common cover glass like an extra-wide super screen.

Within this (optional) "hyperscreen" with the trend-setting MBUX operating system, the front passenger gets his own touch display, with which he can control the Dolby Atmos audio system, for example, and in many countries - depending on the legal regulations - even stream films.

An interior camera monitors that the driver does not allow himself to be distracted after activating autonomy functions.

The EQS variant is produced at the main SUV plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

The close relationship to the sedan can be seen in the drives, and somewhat surprisingly, the Mercedes EQS SUV is also available with rear-wheel drive.

The basic model is the EQS 450+ with 265 kW/360 hp and 568 Nm of torque.

Above that is the all-wheel drive version, which offers the same performance despite the additionally driven front axle, but shines with a maximum torque of 800 Nm.

The top model will initially be the Mercedes EQS 580 4matic with 400 kW/542 hp and 858 Nm.

Despite its stately dimensions, the electric colossus should be more manageable than an unladen weight of 2.5 tons would suggest.

In addition to the low center of gravity, this is ensured in particular by the rear axle steering, which steers up to ten degrees, reducing the turning circle to almost eleven meters.

Depending on the drive variant, the range is between 500 and 660 kilometers.

While the basic variant consumes 18.6 to 23 kWh/100 km, the 580 is 20 to 24 kWh.

The maximum DC charging capacity is 200 kWh, thanks to sophisticated charging management, the 107.8 kWh battery pack should be able to fill up with energy for up to 250 kilometers in 15 minutes.

Of course, Mercedes can pay well for the premium appearance and attention to detail: After the sedan costs at least almost 98,000 euros, the SUV will hardly be available for less than 100,000 euros.

Buyers of the Mercedes EQS SUV have to do without the environmental bonus.
