In a recent cost comparison, Greenpeace showed that electric cars cost less each month than petrol and diesel vehicles.

Anyone who buys an electric car today as an alternative to a petrol or diesel car can save several hundred euros a month on their household budget.

This is the result of a cost comparison drawn up by the environmental organization Greenpeace.

The models VW Golf 2.0 TSI*, VW Tiguan 2.0 TDI and VW ID.3 were compared - the latter is one of the most popular electric cars in Europe.

VW ID.3 beats the competition: costs for electric cars are significantly lower

Assuming annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers and taking into account all the factors involved, monthly costs of 796 euros were

calculated

for the Golf with a petrol engine

and

883 euros for the Tiguan with a diesel engine

, while

the purely electrically driven ID.3 incurs a total of 580 euros

.

The additional costs for combustion vehicles are therefore 216 euros and 303 euros respectively.

Even taking into account the energy price reductions recently decided and limited to three months, the petrol engine would be 183 euros more expensive and the diesel 288 euros more expensive.

For the evaluation of the car costs, the environmental organization used the kilometer costs calculated by the ADAC traffic club, in which

all car costs

are taken into account.

However, Greenpeace has increased the consumption data used by the ADAC by a factor of 1.14 and also adjusted the fuel prices to the current level of 2.00 euros for a liter of petrol and 1.84 euros for a liter of diesel.

Electric cars are sometimes cheaper than train journeys

In addition to car costs, Greenpeace also compared the costs of different mobility alternatives and calculated them for different household types.

According to this, in a single household using a bicycle for local areas and for journeys of more than 10 kilometers by train, taking into account the Bahncard 50, only 205 euros per month.

With this mobility concept, families with two children under the age of 14 could

save 51 euros a month compared to the electric car

.

However, if the two children are over 14 years old, using a bike or train would cost EUR 790 a month,

which is EUR 210 more than an electric car

.
