Why the corona vaccination rate has suddenly increased

2022-04-29T18:06:01.819Z

Until last Thursday it was still said that almost 77 percent of the population had received the first injection, now it is almost 78 percent. What happened?

Anyone who regularly looks at the corona vaccination quotas in Germany should be quite irritated this Friday: the number of doses administered has made a big jump.

The vaccination rates have also changed, some of them have increased and some have fallen.

In absolute numbers, Germany has set a new vaccination record.

Within one day, the number of first, second and first booster vaccinations increased by 1.75 million.

The previous maximum value of the daily administered doses was 1.65 million - it was reached in the middle of the booster campaign on December 15, 2021. The second highest daily value to date of 1.43 million comes from June 2021.

However, the new daily record is not due to a nationwide vaccination campaign last Thursday.

Rather, the RKI has given its vaccination data an urgently needed update.

For vaccinations that were carried out in medical practices by the end of September 2021, it no longer uses their less reliable quick reports, but the much more precise billing data from the associations of statutory health insurance physicians.

Behind the 1.75 million cans are mainly late registrations from the previous year.

A SPIEGEL research in September 2021 revealed that more than 350,000 vaccinations from medical practices had not been reported by the end of June.

The reporting gap calculated at that time comprised only seven federal states, and no data was available from the other federal states.

The new data now make it clear how large the nationwide reporting gap from medical practices was by the end of September: around 1.7 million.

The rate of those who have been vaccinated at least once has also increased by almost one percentage point: it is now 77.6 percent.

On the other hand, the rate of those who were vaccinated twice or “basically immunized” fell by 0.3 percentage points to 75.8 percent.

Rising and falling vaccination rates - how can that be?

The correction in the twice vaccinated has to do with the revised corona vaccination scheme, which has actually been in effect since mid-January.

There was a decisive change in connection with the Janssen vaccine from the manufacturer Johnson & Johnson: in the past, a single dose was enough for Janssen to be considered basic immunization - since the beginning of the year, as with other vaccines, two doses have been needed.

The protective effect after only one dose is too low.

Janssen vaccinated people who have not yet received any further vaccination fall back into the status of once vaccinated.

And Janssen vaccinated people who have received another vaccination now count as basic immunization – no longer as boosted.

Since mid-January, these changes have had very practical effects: for example, anyone who was only vaccinated with a Janssen dose no longer met the 2G requirements.

Now, three and a half months after the new vaccination scheme came into force, the RKI has also adjusted its calculation of the vaccination rates to the new handling.

The proportion of people with basic immunization thus falls slightly.

The recalculation was a long time coming because it was more complicated to implement than it seems at first glance.

With 3.6 million vaccinated people in Germany, Janssen is not widespread.

But the vector vaccine caused major problems in the RKI statistics.

The data from the medical practices lacked information about which vaccine a person had received for the first vaccination.

It was then no longer possible to calculate retrospectively how many original third vaccinations were only second vaccinations according to the new vaccination scheme.

Thanks to the billing data from the Associations of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians, this problem has now been solved - albeit only until September 2021.
