The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported

3,350 new infections

within 24 hours.

That is 682 fewer cases than on Monday a week ago, when 4032 corona infections were reported.

The nationwide

seven-day incidence

drops to

499.2

from 514.0 the previous day.

Five other people died

in connection with the virus.

This increases the number of reported deaths to 136,538.

However, the numbers on Mondays are generally significantly lower than on the other days of the week because of the past weekend.

The falling infection numbers are also reflected in other areas.

According to an analysis by the Barmer Krankenkasse, there has been a significant decline in sick leave due to corona infections for the first time this year.

In the period from April 10 to 16, 63,500 insured employees who were entitled to sick pay due to a Covid 19 disease were unable to work, the health insurance company said after evaluating its own data.

At its peak two weeks earlier, it was 84,900.

Overall, the number of sick leave due to Corona has been growing steadily since the beginning of the year - with the exception of a minimal decrease in early March, as Barmer explained.

In the meanwhile decreasing wave with the omicron virus variant, the number of new infections had risen sharply.

New rules introduced for federal states

With the turn of the month into May, numerous corona regulations in Germany were abolished or relaxed.

A nationwide agreement has been reached on a mask requirement on long-distance trains and planes, and it should also remain in clinics, homes and shelters for the homeless.

Regardless of this, companies, shops and other institutions can insist on wearing masks.

Obligatory tests in clinics, nursing homes, schools and day-care centers can also be ordered.

In addition, the federal and state governments agreed to reduce the isolation period to five days, but the states do not have to implement this immediately.

Details about the rules for the individual federal states can be found here in the overview.
