The eight most significant years of his life, this Algerian with a degree in Islamic law, spent them in high security jails at the American base in Guantanamo, Cuba, where the United States locked up suspected or potential terrorists.
"Guantanamo will stay with me until the end of my life," he told AFP in 2012, three years after his arrival in France, with a consular pass.
