As the Center of Automotive Research (CAR) reports, new car bargains are dwindling in the face of ongoing production bottlenecks.

According to the experts, the supply of vehicles in April was also extremely limited in terms of daily registrations, young used cars, rental vehicles and returns from the leasing business.

New car discounts: Lower than it has been for ten years with combustion engines

Manufacturers and dealers save themselves high discounts in such a situation.

The average discount for the best-selling combustion engine cars has fallen to 16.3 percent - the lowest value in ten years.

"It doesn't have to be the worst for car manufacturers, as the first quarterly results for 2022 and the 2021 balance sheet figures show," says institute director Ferdinand Dudenhöffer.

In addition, customers have to accept unusually long delivery times - however, there are some e-car manufacturers who guarantee delivery times so that buyers can enjoy the environmental bonus.

Small new car discounts: Ukraine war and lockdowns in Shanghai play a role

The background to the poor availability of new cars is the Ukraine war and the subsequent collapse in new car production due to a lack of parts.

There are also corona lockdowns in Shanghai.

According to CAR forecasts, the disrupted production chain in March and partly in April will slowly recover in the next few months.

However, this will take time, not all production losses and backlogs can be made up for in the next six months.

Therefore, there is a high risk that the German car market will end with a new negative record in 2022.
