Electric cars covered an average of over 12,000 kilometers last year.

This means that the electric vehicles have left the petrol engines behind.

Munich – When it comes to electric cars, their opponents have a clear opinion.

There is often talk of rolling electronic scrap, although many myths about the Stromer have long been part of the realm of fables.

This also includes the range, because drivers of electric cars drove an average of 12,217 kilometers last year.

This means that the annual mileage was 18.8 percent higher than with petrol engines (10,210 km), as an evaluation of the "Check24" contracts shows.

Compared to diesel cars, however, electric cars still lose out.

Drivers covered an average of 13,049 km with them, which is seven percent more than with electric vehicles.

The hybrids land just behind the diesel cars, they covered 12,763 kilometers and were thus 14 percent above the average of the vehicles insured via the comparison portal (11,230 km).

"The fact that e-cars cover fewer kilometers than combustion engines can be refuted based on the annual mileage of Check24 customers," says Rainer Klipp, Managing Director of Motor Vehicle Insurance at Check24.

"The range of electric cars is constantly being improved and the concern that they will break down is now unfounded."

In addition to the annual mileage, the comparison portal also determined which electric cars are most popular with Germans.

The Renault Zoe took first place, followed by the Volkswagen e-Up, which was again sold out.

Third and fourth place went to the Tesla Model 3 as a long and standard range, respectively.

The smart fortwo electric drive rounds off the top five.

"Due to rising fuel prices and government subsidies for e-cars, demand will continue to rise," explains Klipp.

Electric cars eat up kilometers – Yaris is particularly popular with hybrids

The development is likely to be different for hybrids, because the environmental bonus is to be reformed.

From 2023, the federal government only wants to fund purely electric cars, and there will no longer be any money for plug-in hybrids.

A decision that Audi boss Markus Duesmann welcomed.

Nevertheless, it is also worth taking a look at the most popular hybrids in Germany.

According to “Check24”, the Toyota Yaris has the edge here.

With the Auris and the Prius, Toyota also occupies the following places.

The VW Golf and the Fiat 500 complete the top five.
